Milwaukee Brewers Microbrew

Show Notes

The Milwaukee Brewers offense and bullpen have been going through it, even though the team has continued so steadily rack up wins. An ugly loss to Chicago on Sunday highlighted the team's sudden woes with runners in scoring position, which has typically been Milwaukee's calling card. The bullpen, meanwhile, is short on arms. Even the wins were ugly, but on the bright side, the team's starting pitching might be at the peak of its powers right now, particularly with the triumphant return of Brandon Woodruff. Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe discuss the 4-2 week and which aspects of the team's issues are concerning: Christian Yelich? Chad Patrick? Aaron Ashby? Brice Turang? In Three Up Three Down (36:45), they discuss an emotional win involving Venezuelan players whose hearts were with their home country, Joey Ortiz's big Monday, and an escape in Cincinnati, plus an anticipated return from a rehabbing pitcher. In Remembrew When (55:45), JR looks at another manager who overcame health problems to return to the bench, somewhat similar to Pat Murphy's return one day after back surgery. In Curt Blanche (59:50), Curt's thinking about another Milwaukee star athlete. Then, JR is joined briefly by new shortstop Cooper Pratt (1:10:45) to discuss the start of his big-league career.

The Milwaukee Brewers know their opponent in the World Series: The Tampa Bay Rays, a fellow small-market (ish) team that has yet to win a World Series in franchise history. Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe take a look at the matchup, including two key familiar names in starting pitchers Drew Rasmussen and Freddy Peralta. They look at the hitters, the vibes and more with Game 1 of the World Series on its way Friday. Then, take a stroll back in time to hear some recent history from past episodes, including a 2023 episode in which the duo discussed the hiring of Pat Murphy (and initial trade for Jake Bauers), the 2024 post-mortem after the wild-card loss to the Mets and the 2025 episode in which the Dodgers swept the Brewers in the NLCS.

The last time Milwaukee won a World Series, it took seven dramatic games, an otherworldly performance from a starting pitcher and even a walk-off home run. But they weren't the Brewers. Rich Schabowski, a driving force in the Milwaukee Braves Historical Society, offers a look back at the 1957 championship, and 1958 World Series runner-up finish and the general legacy of the Braves, who never had a losing season in 13 years in Milwaukee but left for Atlanta anyway.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Curt Hogg is back from Los Angeles and looking back at the team's incredible four-game sweep of the Dodgers. Milwaukee, you have a World Series! The Brewers rallied back from a 4-0 deficit against the Dodgers in Game 4 of the NLCS on Thursday and won, 6-4, sealing off a stunning four-game sweep that gets the Brewers back to the Fall Classic for the first time since 1982. Jake Bauers was named NLCS MVP after yet another huge performance, and Aaron Ashby threw three shutout innings yet again in his star-turn postseason. We'll get to more analysis and breakdown, but this one is about you, Milwaukee. Marinate in the moment by hearing stories from people who wrote us about what a Brewers World Series would mean to them.

The Milwaukee Brewers are in the endgame now. With a 6-2 win over the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Wednesday, the Brewers are one win away from their first World Series in 44 years. Jake Bauers followed up one of the best at-bats in Brewers history two days earlier with ... an even greater at-bat, an 11th-pitch home run that tilted the scales as Milwaukee rallied back from a 2-1 deficit. Then, Garrett Mitchell added icing on the cake with a back-to-back homer against Blake Snell, who had been dominant to that point. Robert Gasser was great, DL Hall was nails, and holy smokes, we're really on the doorstep. Host JR Radcliffe and special guest co-host Jonathan Judge of Baseball Prospectus break it down, and yes, Judge shares some insight on why his PECOTA rankings didn't see the Brewers as anything close to what they've become.
