Why Finding Aliens Could Doom Humanity

Cool Worlds

Summary

The concept of the "Great Filter" in discussions of extraterrestrial life raises significant questions about the evolution of civilizations and the absence of evidence for advanced alien species. This idea, first articulated by economist Robin Hanson, suggests that there are critical barriers in the development of life that prevent civilizations from reaching a point of widespread exploration or communication. The absence of detected alien civilizations, despite the vastness of the universe, leads to speculation about whether humanity has already passed through these filters or if they lie ahead.

Key events in Earth's history, such as the emergence of life, the development of photosynthesis, and the evolution of complex organisms, are considered potential filters. Each of these milestones may represent unique occurrences that are rare in the universe. The discussion also touches on the possibility that intelligent life, while it may arise, does not necessarily lead to technological advancement or the capacity for space colonization. This raises the question of whether civilizations tend to self-destruct before they can become "loud" in the cosmic sense.

Philosopher Nick Bostrom warns that discovering life elsewhere, particularly if it is independent from Earth, could imply that humanity faces a dire future. If life can emerge easily on multiple planets, it suggests that the barriers to developing advanced civilizations are more significant than previously thought. This perspective emphasizes the importance of understanding our place in the universe and the potential challenges that lie ahead for humanity as we continue to explore the cosmos.

The Rare Earth Hypothesis suggests that our planet may the product of an incredibly improbable sequence of events, and thus perhaps intelligent life is extremely rare in the cosmos. Here we tackle this highly influential idea and the arguments behind it. But, digging deeper, we'll uncover some problems with the Rare Earth idea - some of which strike to the very core of our scientific quest.Written & presented by Prof David Kipping→ Support our research program: https://www.coolworldslab.com/support→ Get Stash here! https://teespring.com/stores/cool-worlds-storeTHANK-YOU to our supporters D. And now time for something completely different. This week I was interviewed for the science documentary show "How the Universe Works" and I decided to film some time lapses of the shooting and give you a little insight into this rather different way of communicating science to our regular style on Cool Worlds. Earth-sized planets found in the habitable-zones of low-mass stars are likely to become tidally locked to the star, with one side baked in perpetual sunlight and other trapped in an eternal night. These so-called "Eyeball Earths" turn out to be extremely common and some famous examples include Proxima b and the planets around TRAPPIST-1. Here, we explain why this tidal locking happens and what it means for the potential habitability of these alien worlds.::More about this Video::► "Discovery of a Planet around our Nearest Star: Proxima b" Cool Worlds video by Dr Guillem Anglada: https://youtu.be/59ClESB1AqA► "Proxima b: Transits, Habitability & How to Get There!"
