Summary
A nephrologist from regional Queensland shares insights on the impact of low-carbohydrate diets on chronic kidney disease (CKD) and metabolic syndrome. After struggling with his own health issues, including diabetes and hypertension, he adopted a low-carb lifestyle that significantly improved his condition. He emphasizes that many patients with CKD also suffer from metabolic syndrome, which complicates their treatment and management.
The nephrologist presents a case study of a young woman who, after experiencing severe hypertension and kidney damage, successfully lost weight and improved her health through a low-carb diet. Despite being on dialysis, she managed to reduce her blood pressure medications and improve her metabolic markers. He advocates for a low-carb approach in managing CKD, particularly in patients with early to moderate stages of the disease, while stressing the importance of careful monitoring and individualized treatment plans.
He challenges traditional dietary guidelines that often restrict protein intake for kidney patients, arguing that a focus on reducing carbohydrates can lead to better health outcomes. The nephrologist concludes that low-carb diets can be beneficial for CKD patients, provided they are monitored closely and tailored to individual needs.

Carolyn Rogers is a Brisbane-based Psychologist who works in private practice. She has a special interest and extensive experience in weight management and eating disorders. Before becoming a Psychologist, Carolyn was a Registered Nurse and she has a passion for health and science. In this presentation Carolyn describes a number of studies done by Psychologists using animal models, and later human models, to show the addictive properties of sugar. Sugar and highly-palatable processed foods can produce the same brain responses as substances of abuse. These processed foods pose a problem for anyone trying to control their weight because they hijack the appetite leading to a vicious cycle of overconsumption, withdrawal symptoms when access is denied and cravings, leading to further overconsumption.Carolyn Rogers can be contacted via her website at www.carolynrogers.com.au Learn more about your ad choices. Dr Anthony Chaffee is an American medical doctor specialising in Neurosurgery who over a span of 20 years has researched the optimal nutritional habits for athletic performance and health. It is his assertion that most of the so-called chronic diseases that doctors treat these days are actually caused by the food we eat, or don’t eat, and can in many cases be reversed easily with dietary changes.Dr. Chaffee began his University education studying Molecular & Cellular Biology with a Minor in Chemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle at the age of 15, which culminated in attaining his MD from the Royal College of Surgeons.Dr. Chaffee is an All-American rugby player and a former professional athlete in England and America, having taken several years off from his education for the pursuit of sports between his undergraduate degree and medical school. Throughout his athletic career he saw first hand the monumental difference that diet makes to performance and recovery.Dr. Chaffee almost accidentally came across and practiced a fully carnivorous diet from age 20 to 25, having first learned of the toxic nature of plants during his University education. Since then he has rediscovered this truth and more and has dedicated many years and a large part of his professional practice to the study and education of diet and nutrition. He personally practices a fully carnivorous diet and currently resides in Perth, Australia where he does private consultations and clinics in functional medicine and nutrition. Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon.
