Breakfast All Day movie reviewsShow Notes
It's an accidental theme week here at Breakfast All Day. We love when those happen. We're in a bit of a lull for new movies between "The Odyseey" last week and "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" next week, but here's what we reviewed for you. HER PRIVATE HELL. The first film in a decade from Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive," "The Neon Demon") has lavish style but it's totally inscrutable. Go for the clothes and the production design if you must see it. Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton and Havana Rose Liu star. In theaters.
HADESTOWN: THE MUSICAL. This is an extraordinary live capture of AnaÏs Mitchell's Tony-winning musical. All the stars from the original Broadway run are here for this London West End performance. If you've seen "Hadestown," you'll want to see it again in this thrilling, intimate form. And if you've never seen it, prepare to be dazzled. In theaters for only about a week. Find out more and get tickets here.
MOVIE NEWS LIVE! This went extra long because there was so much to discuss, including the Venice and Toronto film festival lineups, Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge, the "Avengers: Doomsday" trailer, Elon Musk's AI version of "The Odyssey," the Cinerama Dome returning and more. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.
Thanks for starting your weekend with us! Look for our "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" out of the theater reaction on Monday night. Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
More from Breakfast All Day movie reviews
It's a big, random, fall weekend here at Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed on the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast: CLAYFACE. Tom Rhys Harries stars as the Batman villain: a handsome actor who goes to extremes to get his looks back after a vengeful mob boss cuts up his face. This is super gnarly. Co-starring Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan. In theaters.
It's Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday here at Breakfast All Day. We've already reviewed the big movie everyone's talking about this week, the Elizabeth Holmes documentary "You Can See Everything." And as for "Street Fighter," Alonso did a quick out-of-the-theater reaction. But there are always plenty of new movies to discuss. Here's what we reviewed on our latest episode: LA BOLA NEGRA. It's a sweeping historical drama and a queer Spanish romance. And it was a very big deal at this year's Cannes Film Festival, where the directors, known collectively as Los Javis, won the top prize. Playing in theaters now before streaming on Netflix starting Dec. 2.
October means all the movies are very long and important. Well, most of them are. Here's what we reviewed on the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast. YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING. This is a very early look at the Elizabeth Holmes documentary, so it's a non-spoiler review, because there's a lot you're going to want to discover and discuss on your own. Directors Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim spent a month with the disgraced Theranos founder in her home before she had to report to prison for defrauding investors. The results are mesmerizing. In theaters Oct. 16, then come to our LIVE spoiler chat on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Noon Pacific and we'll really get into it.
It's a big midweek episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast. Here's what we've got for you this time: THE SOCIAL RECKONING. Aaron Sorkin's follow-up to David Fincher's searing 2010 drama "The Social Network" focuses on Facebook -- and its founder -- from a different angle. This one's more of a journalistic procedural, and we don't agree on it. Starring Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madson, Betty Gilpin, Wunmi Mosaku, Bill Burr, and Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. In theaters this weekend.
A ridiculously huge episode of Breakfast All Day to kick off October. Here's what we reviewed this week: DIGGER. Tom Cruise teams up with Alejandro G. Iñárritu for a massive, cacophonous climate change parable. We couldn't stand it, but we were also in awe of its cinematography and production design. Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller and Jesse Plemons co-star. In theaters. And once you've seen the movie, come to our LIVE spoiler chat at our YouTube channel on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Noon Pacific.
