Genivive Clinton is a force of nature in stand-up comedy—a bold, dynamic voice whose raw honesty, sharp wit, and electric stage presence have taken her from the gritty streets of Detroit to headlining clubs and opening for comedy giants across the country. Born and raised primarily in Detroit (with a brief preschool stint in San Antonio), Genivive grew up artsy and expressive, channeling her energy into drawing, painting, school skits, poetry slams, singing, dancing, and liturgical performances in church. But her childhood was marked by a broken home and deep personal pain that led to two attempted suicides—experiences she confronts with courageous vulnerability on the Shawn Johnson Podcast Episode 55. Those struggles as a Black woman navigating trauma, poverty, and her path through Michigan State University (where she studied psychology) only fueled her resilience. Post-grad, she bounced through unfulfilling jobs in social work, childcare, and cleaning before earning her CDL and spending nearly four years as a big rig truck driver. Those long hauls—listening to comedy specials on the road—became her unexpected comedy bootcamp, sparking the fire that led to her first open mic in Minnesota in 2016. She kept trucking while hitting mics sporadically until 2018, when she quit the wheel for good, moved to Texas with fellow Detroit comic Markus Olind, and went all-in on her dreams. Today, based in Austin, Genivive is one of the hottest rising comedians in the game and a fixture at the Comedy Mothership (where she aced her door-person audition and scored a golden-ticket Kill Tony bucket pull). She’s a four-time Moontower Comedy Festival performer with a Jam in the Van set under her belt, and she’s toured stages from clubs to theaters across the U.S. and Canada. Her credits include opening for Joe Rogan, Tim Dillon, Ron White, Alonzo Bodden, Tony Hinchcliffe, Duncan Trussell, Aida Rodriguez, and more.
