The benefit of hindsight is that you can see how things from your past have carefully placed the pieces together to create the path that you’re on. Our next trailblazer, Sandy Pitcher, Chief Executive at the Department of Human Services for the South Australian Government, joins us in our latest episode to talk about this as she reflects on her career. Sandy shares her experiences in growing up in a small country town, how having the desire to change the world led her to the public service, how she rises to the task of many challenges she has been given, and the important lessons she has learned along the way in knowing what your strengths are, using them, and letting others step up in using their strengths towards a shared vision and authorising environment.

This episode emphasises how imperative engagement and building solid relationships are right from the get-go, how you can always lead, communicate and engage with kindness and compassion, and the vital importance of understanding the capacity of yourself and your organisation to be able to deal with the here and now, as well as being able to step back when it’s appropriate to think critically and for the longer term.
A key sentiment we often hear from guests on this podcast is that change is necessary, and it’s uncomfortable. But what if organisational change isn’t enough? This provocation is one that our latest guest, Natalia Cowley, explores deeply in her new book, Inflector, where she looks back on her extensive experience working with organisations who have faced pivotal inflection points.
Danielle Wood, Chair of the Productivity Commission, has had an incredibly busy year, and she took time out of her busy schedule to join me in our latest podcast episode to talk about how we can apply a growth mindset approach to boosting productivity. It’s a fantastic chat that highlights the critical need to boost productivity in Australia, and Danielle provides several approaches on how to turn it around.
As a people and culture leader, Emma Connell has seen and experienced both sides of organisational change, including when it’s managed well and when it’s not. Emma is the Executive Director of People and Culture at the Aged Care Quality Safety Commission. She joins us in our latest episode to share her experiences and offer her advice in leading and supporting people through change, whether it be internal changes within an organisation’s control, or external changes in response to changes to acts, standards, and regulations.
A lot has changed over the past ten years, and the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing is no exception! From the 2016 capability review, the COVID pandemic, the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, and the second capability review in late 2022, DoHAC stands at a critical point in its history, having evolved considerably in how it approaches change and prepares itself for the future. Rachel Balmanno, First Assistant Secretary of the People, Communication, and Parliamentary Branch, at the department, joins us to discuss a future-oriented approach to change in our latest episode.
