Benjamin Harrison: The Forgotten President
BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSummary
Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd president of the United States, is often remembered as one of the most forgotten figures in American history, typically ranked poorly by historians. Despite being born into a prominent political family, with his grandfather being a former president, Harrison's journey to the White House was marked by a series of personal and political challenges. His early life was characterized by a sense of destiny, yet his presidency from 1889 to 1893 did not fulfill the high expectations set by his lineage.
Harrison's military service during the Civil War as a colonel in the 70th Indiana Regiment is often seen as the pinnacle of his career, where he gained respect for his leadership and dedication to his men. After the war, he struggled to find his footing in politics, facing setbacks in gubernatorial races before eventually securing the presidency in a contentious election against Grover Cleveland. His administration is noted for its progressive stances on civil rights and conservation, including the establishment of national parks and efforts to improve race relations, although many of his initiatives failed to pass through Congress.
Despite these efforts, Harrison's presidency is often overshadowed by economic turmoil and political missteps, including the disastrous Sherman Silver Act and the McKinley Tariff, which contributed to the Republican Party's significant losses in the 1890 midterms. His term ended with a rematch against Cleveland in 1892, which he lost amid personal tragedy following the death of his wife. Harrison's legacy remains complex; while he may not be celebrated as a great president, his contributions to civil rights and conservation reflect a more nuanced character than history often acknowledges.
