The Narcissist's Favorite Weapon: "You Need to Forgive Me"
Restoring Resilience with Chelsey Brooke ColeShow Notes
"You need to forgive me. I said I was sorry. What more do you want?" If you've heard some version of that — from a narcissist, a family member, or someone who has no idea what you actually lived through — this episode is for you. In part one of a two-part series, Chelsey Brooke Cole unpacks what's really happening when a narcissist demands your forgiveness. Spoiler: they aren't asking for forgiveness. They're asking for access back into your life, erasure of the consequences, and your silence. And when they wrap that demand in spiritual language, it stops being about the betrayal and starts being about how well you're handling the betrayal. Chelsey shares her own story — a grandiose first husband, an affair he brought home proof of, and the college professor whose first response to the divorce was "You couldn't make it work?" — before dismantling what forgiveness is not. Forgiveness is not reconciliation. It's not condoning what happened, minimizing the damage, or feeling warm toward someone who hurt you. It's not letting them back into your home or your heart. And it isn't something you can manufacture on demand because someone told you that you should — in abuse recovery, rushed forgiveness can re-traumatize you by cutting off the grief and anger that genuine healing requires. If forgiveness has felt impossible, it may be because what you were asked to do was never forgiveness. It was compliance. Those are two very different things. Part two covers what forgiveness actually is — the research, how psychologists define and study it, and what the Bible actually says versus what you may have been taught it requires. Follow the show so you don't miss it. No matter where you are in your healing, resilience can be restored. Abusers don't target the weak. They target kind, patient, capable people who will do the emotional work they refuse to do. Don Hennessy, author of Steps to Freedom, returns to continue our conversation about how predators choose their targets. This time we focus on the shame and self-blame survivors carry long after the relationship ends. Drawing on four decades of work with survivors and abusive men, Don explains why entitlement is the root of abuse. He describes how skilled abusers fool therapists and turn therapy language against their partners. He also explains why confusion is one of the clearest signs that you're being controlled. We talk about the "monologue" survivors carry in their heads, why your intuition was hidden rather than broken, and how an emotional shield can let the light back in. Key takeaways: Trauma and addiction explain nothing. Abusers always knew it was wrong. Measure the impact, not the behavior. Abuse without a raised hand is still abuse. Nothing you did caused it, and nothing you do will fix it. You haven't lost yourself. You've been hidden. Retire from the job of educating your abuser, starting today. Sabrina Bendory joins me for an honest conversation about dating after narcissistic abuse, and how to tell the difference between a real red flag and a trauma trigger. We talk about why survivors so often hide their feelings for fear of being "too much," how to tell anxiety from intuition, and why detaching from outcomes (not people) lets you date from self-worth instead of fear. Whether you're newly dating, in a relationship that finally feels safe, or wondering if you'll ever trust yourself again, this conversation is a reminder that healthy love isn't supposed to feel dangerous, and that you can learn to trust what your body is telling you. Narcissistic abuse can leave you feeling invisible in your own home, disconnected from who you are, and unable to explain what you're living through, even to the people closest to you. In this episode of Restoring Resilience, Chelsey Brooke Cole explores the three layers of loneliness in narcissistic relationships: Isolation from yourself. Through cycles of punishment and reinforcement, narcissists condition you to think from the outside in, until their voice becomes the one you hear most. DARVO and the silent rules. Learn how Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender shifts the blame onto you, and how it teaches you to stop bringing things up altogether. Isolation from others. When well-meaning friends offer advice that won't work in an abusive dynamic, you start pulling back, losing the outside reality checks you need most. Chelsey closes with two simple questions to ask yourself twice a day to begin turning your attention back inward and rebuilding your sense of agency. Why does leaving a narcissist feel like withdrawal? Dark triad researcher Dr. Daniel Jones explains his "social cocaine" theory: how a narcissist's artificial charm and grandiosity create a rush that can leave you craving the highs, even after the abuse begins. It's a drug you never consented to, and it can happen to anyone. In this episode of the Restoring Resilience Podcast, Chelsey and Dr. Jones unpack the differences between narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism, how manipulation escalates in stages, and why Machiavellian partners can go undetected for years. They also explore emophilia (the tendency to fall in love fast and often), why early butterflies can be a misleading signal, and practical steps for detoxing from a toxic relationship, including Dr. Jones's CBR method: Cool, Bottom line, Rational. Most of all, this conversation is a reminder: it's not your fault, and you are stronger than you were before. ABOUT DR. DANIEL Daniel N. Jones is a Professor of Management at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR). He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters and earned the Early Career Award from the Western Psychological Association. His research focuses on the differentiation of the Dark Triad (Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism) and Dark Tetrad (Dark Triad + sadism) of personality (visit: www.darktriad.co). His recent book, "Falling Fast: The Perils and Possibilities of Emophilia," discusses the propensity to fall in love easily and is readily available at Oxford University Press and Amazon. Why do so many survivors know something is wrong and still abandon their own needs, intuition, and boundaries? Jessica Anne Pressler is a therapist, a hospice social worker, and the creator of the Traitor Within Framework. She calls that part of you "the traitor within." It's the part that learned in childhood that keeping the peace, avoiding rejection, and earning love was the safest way to live. In this conversation, Jessica explains: how those childhood coping patterns follow us into adult relationships how narcissists study them and use them against us why this part of us deserves compassion instead of shame She talks openly about her own relationships, how she eventually saw her pattern, and the small, practical steps that help rewire it. Those include setting small boundaries, building a life outside the relationship, and seeing each attempt to leave as practice rather than failure. ABOUT JESSICA Jessica Anne Pressler, LCSW, is a Columbia University-trained psychotherapist and author with four decades of experience helping people heal from narcissistic abuse, trauma, and grief. She is the creator of the Traitor Within framework and author of two books: Traitor Within, a debut novel that weaves healing tools into one woman's journey of overcoming trauma, and Your Traitor Within Journal, a year-long guide of journaling prompts designed to help readers unpack their own inner critic and patterns of self-sabotage, day by day. She is also the host of the Your Traitor Within podcast, featuring weekly candid conversations with guests who share their own stories of the inner voice that holds them back.
