43: Mickey Trescott Returns: The New Autoimmune Protocol

The AIP Summit Podcast

Show Notes

In this episode, Jaime and Marie-Noelle welcome back Mickey Trescott — founder of Autoimmune Wellness, co-creator of the AIP Certified Coach Practitioner Training Program, and one of the pioneers of the Autoimmune Protocol. Mickey joins us to talk about her brand new book, The New Autoimmune Protocol, the first comprehensive update to the protocol since its inception.

If you haven't listened to Episode 2, where Mickey first joined us to discuss the origins of AIP, the AIP Certified Coach Program, and where she saw the protocol heading, we encourage you to go back and check it out.

What we cover in this episode:

How the book came together as the culmination of years of work updating AIP, including the transition to Modified AIP that Mickey and the AIP Certified Coach community have been implementing since 2023

Why the Transition Phase is now an official, fully developed phase of the protocol with a five-step framework, including baseline tracking, developing your "why," a confidence assessment, selecting a start date, and preparing for elimination

What the growing body of AIP research reveals — eight published studies now exist across IBD (Crohn's and ulcerative colitis), Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and rheumatoid arthritis, with consistent patterns of meaningful improvement in approximately three out of four people who implement the elimination phase

Why Modified AIP is now Mickey's recommended starting point for most people, and how adding foods like rice, pseudo grains, seeds, and ghee solves real-world barriers around affordability, convenience, and sustainability

How the book is designed to serve both self-guided AIP practitioners and AIP Certified Coaches using it as a tool in their practice — and where a coach's skills are best put to use

The exciting news on the medical and research frontier, including the NIH NOURISH Autoimmunity Challenge, Capitol Hill advocacy, and why Mickey expects an explosion of new AIP research in the coming years

Mickey's closing message: healing doesn't end in the elimination phase — and what sustainable, long-term healing through AIP actually looks like

Does cold weather really make autoimmune disease worse? In this episode, Jaime and Marie-Noelle start with their own experiences of the colder months, then walk through what the research shows. They share practical strategies for the season, from staying active and vitamin D to indoor humidity, paraffin wax baths for stiff hands, Raynaud's tips, and staying well during cold and flu season, flagging how strong the evidence is for each. They also share what's new at Urban AIP this fall, take on the question of whether to start AIP now or wait until after the holidays, and close with a little homework.

Jennifer Franchak, functional nutritionist and AIP Certified Coach, returns to the podcast for her first interview appearance after featuring her presentation back in episode 38. This time, Jennifer and Jaime talk about a problem more and more women with autoimmune disease are running into: having access to more health information than ever before, and still not feeling any clearer about what actually matters for their own body. Jennifer shares what she sees in her practice with women who have already tried nearly everything, why gathering more information isn't the same as gaining clarity, and how her new workshop, the Flare-Up Freedom Blueprint, helps women connect the pieces of their own autoimmune puzzle.

Laurane Chemenda returns to walk listeners through her reintroduction journey, now five years in and still evolving. She talks candidly about what has made the process take as long as it has, the moment a reintroduction attempt sent her a clear signal, how she distinguishes psychological hesitation from genuine physiological caution, and what she'd tell someone who feels discouraged that their own reintroduction isn't following a tidy timeline. The conversation closes with a look at Bien-être Auto-immune, the French-language AIP platform and community Laurane founded.
