Summary
Recent research from Japan highlights the potential benefits of activated vitamin D supplementation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducted by local clinicians and academics, the study reveals that a significant percentage of participants had low vitamin D levels, with 65 to 77 percent of those admitted to the trial exhibiting deficiencies. The findings suggest that those with the lowest vitamin D concentrations may benefit the most from supplementation, particularly in reducing the need for respiratory support and improving survival rates among hospitalized patients.
The study compared an intervention group receiving activated vitamin D to a control group. Results indicated that only 6 percent of the vitamin D group required respiratory support, compared to 14 percent in the control group. Additionally, the need for high-flow oxygen was significantly lower in the vitamin D group (4 percent) versus the control group (11 percent). While the mortality rates showed a trend favoring the vitamin D group (3 percent versus 5 percent), the difference was not statistically significant due to the small sample size.
The researchers emphasized the importance of vitamin D for immune function, noting its role in producing antiviral peptides and regulating inflammatory responses. Despite the promising results, the study's authors called for larger-scale trials to confirm the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in improving outcomes for COVID-19 patients. The findings raise questions about the lack of widespread research and promotion of low-cost, effective treatments like vitamin D, especially given its potential to enhance public health during respiratory illness outbreaks.

The goal should be to raise 25(OH)D concentrations above 40–60 ng/mL (100–150 nmol/L). For treatment of people who become infected with COVID-19, higher vitamin D3 doses might be useful. Most of these new adult infections are in the under 50s, who still have a relatively low risk of being admitted to hospital, especially if they’ve been fully vaccinated. As the winter approaches, it’s important parents of school-aged children and students don’t pass the virus on to more vulnerable grandparents by not recognising simple cold-like symptoms as a possible COVID infection. This is a critical time and a little caution could make all the difference in avoiding a winter crisis for hospitals.Zoe Live feedhttps://covid.joinzoe.com/data#levels-over-timeUK official datahttps://coronavirus.data.gov.ukCanadahttps://health-infobase.canada.ca/covid-19/epidemiological-summary-covid-19-cases.htmlUnited StatesDeaths, 705,326 (JH)https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.htmlCases and deathshttps://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#trends_dailycasesHospital patientshttps://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#hospitalizationsVaccination trendshttps://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#vaccination-trends_vacctrends-total-dailyThe White Househttps://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/10/06/covid-delta-variant-live-updates/$1 billion for rapid, at-home coronavirus testsQuadruple such tests by DecemberUp to 200 million per monthVaccines probably prevented, in Medicare beneficiaries in the first five months of this yearhttps://aspe.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/documents/8d15a6223df12fcb59de1f031adb1eec/aspe-covid-medicare-vaccine-analysis.pdf265,000 infections107,000 hospitalizations39,000 deathsThree Moderna founders make Forbes list of America’s richest during pandemic$2.48 billion in R and D and supply funding from the U.S. governmenthttps://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma/after-nearly-1b-research-funding-moderna-takes-1-5b-coronavirus-vaccine-order-from-u-shttps://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/10/06/covid-delta-variant-live-updates/A list of the top 400 richest people in AmericaTop 400, 40% richer than last yearJohnson and Johnson and AstraZeneca, no profits during the pandemicAustraliahttps://www.health.gov.au/news/health-alerts/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert/coronavirus-covid-19-case-numbers-and-statisticsPolandFourth wave is gathering paceCases up 70% in the past weekHealth service stretched to its limits last springWaldemar Kraska, a deputy health ministerToday's data is a very fast flashing red lightRussia soars daily deaths increasinghttps://news.sky.com/story/covid-news-uk-latest-live-experts-discover-why-people-get-covid-toes-as-wales-introduces-vaccine-passports-12425651The Kremlin confirmed, Cases, + 25,133Deaths, + 929 = 208,842 Learn more about your ad choices.
