Show Notes

What do you do when practice feels tougher? Discounts? More ads? Lower the barrier to entry? In this episode, Martin sits down with Dr Shady Botros to unpack a different path: relational growth. Over the last 15+ years, Shady has developed a framework for building genuine relationships with GPs that has led to more than 800 GP referral visits a year.

Not by watering down chiropractic. Not by pretending to be something he’s not. And not by chasing transactional growth.

We talk about: • Why tough economic times change how people make healthcare decisions • The difference between transactional and relational practice growth • How Shady approaches GPs without selling out chiropractic • Why most GPs aren’t anti-chiropractic (they’re mostly just not thinking about you) • The surprising reason GP referrals can be remarkably stable in uncertain times • The 4-part framework Shady teaches to build professional relationships with medical doctors

Whether practice feels hard right now or you simply want to help more people without leaning harder into discounts and ads, this one is worth a listen. How do you step away from a practice without everything depending on you? Dr Josh Slade has moved from being the sole chiropractor in his Cairns practice to leading a team remotely, while opening a new practice in Brisbane. In this episode, he joins Martin to share what worked, what went wrong, and what he had to learn to let go. They discuss: How to give your team ownership without stepping back in.

They stopped care. The pain came back. Now they've booked in again. It’s easy to pick up where you left off. But something made them decide to return today. In this episode, I explore two words that help uncover it: “Why now?” Perhaps there’s a hiking trip coming up. They want to get fit for a wedding. Or they’re tired of struggling to play with their kids. We look at why people minimise their problems, how to uncover what matters to them, and how to make a reactivation visit more relevant. They’re back. This is your chance to understand what’s changed. What does it take to build a practice you would happily send your own mum to? Dr Bec Bowring has been in practice for more than 32 years. Today, she helps lead seven chiropractors across three Sydney locations, each with its own community, team and focus. In this episode, Martin and Bec discuss how her work has evolved from a traditional chiropractic setting to collaborating with dentists on paediatric development, airway health, and sleep. They explore how chiropractic can complement dental care, why some interdisciplinary partnerships succeed while others fail, and the importance of aligning on both clinical standards and how a practice is run. Bec also discusses her changing approach to leadership. Rather than trying to mould associates into copies of herself, she now focuses on finding good people and giving them “bounded autonomy” within a clear practice culture. They discuss creating a boutique practice, choosing quality over volume, making the environment part of the experience and the question guiding Bec’s decisions: “Would I send my mum here?” A thoughtful conversation about collaboration, leadership, and building a remarkable practice without losing sight of what matters.

What if your clients could actually see what was happening to their nervous system around an adjustment? That question sits behind Chiro Ring, the wearable Dr Vismai Schonfelder has spent the past few years developing. In this episode, Vismai joins Martin to talk about why he believes wearable technology could change the way chiropractors communicate the value of what they do. They explore how Chiro Ring can track health metrics around an adjustment, why personal data can sometimes communicate more powerfully than another explanation, and the enormous research opportunity created when thousands of adjustments can be logged over time. But there’s a bigger idea underneath it all. Nervous-system regulation is having a moment. People are tracking sleep, HRV, stress and recovery. They’re doing breathwork, meditation and cold plunges. Yet chiropractic is often missing from the conversation. Vismai wants to change that. They also debrief the recent Bali Reset, including what Vismai changed in his practice and life after creating enough space actually to think. A conversation about data, communication, adaptability and what chiropractic might look like if we make it easier for people to understand what we’ve been talking about all along.

What do you do when chiropractic itself comes under threat? In this episode, Martin is joined again by Dr Nimrod Mueller. The conversation starts with a fascinating shift happening among Gen Z chiropractors, team members and practice members: less interest in optimisation, career climbing and rigid commitment, and more value placed on autonomy, connection and quality of life. Then the conversation gets bigger. Nimrod explains the regulatory challenge currently facing chiropractors in Spain and what it could mean for their ability to practise. But this isn’t just an episode about Spain. It’s a conversation about how a small profession responds when it feels threatened. Do we fight louder? Do we retreat? Or do we get better at communication, research, political influence, and understanding the people we’re trying to persuade? Martin and Nimrod explore why evidence matters, why evidence alone often isn’t enough, and why the future of chiropractic may depend on our ability to fight smarter, not louder.
