Why Consequences Fail With ADHD Teens (And What Works)

Parenting ADHD with Annie Adjan

Show Notes

Are you exhausted from handing out consequences to your ADHD teen, only to watch the same mistakes happen again?

You ground them. You take away the phone. You enforce the consequence. And yet… nothing really changes.

In this episode, I’ll show you why consequence-heavy parenting often doesn’t work very well for the ADHD brain — and how one simple shift can help you get better results with far fewer battles.

Using the familiar ABC model of behavior, we’re going to stop putting so much attention on C — the consequence and start parenting more proactively at A — the activator. In other words, instead of waiting for your teenager to mess up and then reacting, you’ll learn how to get out ahead of the predictable ADHD challenges and set your teen up for success.

I’ll also give you my three R’s for A+ Parenting: Remove, Rehearse, and Reinforce — three practical ADHD parenting strategies you can start using right away.

Because ADHD teens don’t need more opportunities to fail and get punished. They need more opportunities to experience success, build executive functioning skills, form better habits, and hear us catch them doing something right.

Oppositional behavior is not a parenting failure, and it is not just “bad behavior.” In this episode, Annie explains why anger, non-compliance, and defiance are often part of how ADHD shows up in teens, especially when they are overwhelmed, dysregulated, or missing key skills. She shares two practical tools parents can use to respond more effectively: a calm, firm in-the-moment strategy for heated situations, and a collaborative approach for solving the real problems underneath the behavior later. If you feel like you’re losing your child to constant conflict, this episode will help you lead with more calm, more clarity, and more confidence.
