Low Carb Down Under

Claire McDonnell Liu - 'ADHD, Autism and Metabolic Health'

Low Carb Down Under

Summary

A recent discussion highlights the connection between metabolic health and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and ADHD. The conversation emphasizes the need to explore these conditions through a metabolic lens rather than solely a behavioral one. Evidence suggests that dietary changes, particularly reducing processed foods and increasing whole foods, can lead to significant improvements in symptoms for individuals with these disorders.

One notable case from a special education school in England illustrates this point. A 16-year-old boy with autism, who typically displayed disengagement and lethargy, showed remarkable behavioral changes after participating in a food pilot program that replaced his usual junk food with nutritious meals. Staff reported that he became more active, engaged, and even joyful, highlighting the potential impact of dietary interventions on mental health and behavior.

The discussion also addresses the rising prevalence of autism and ADHD, linking it to factors such as parental metabolic health and access to nutritious food. Studies indicate that children from wealthier backgrounds tend to have lower rates of these diagnoses, suggesting that socioeconomic factors play a critical role in developmental health. Furthermore, emerging research points to insulin resistance and blood glucose regulation as key areas of concern, with potential therapeutic avenues in nutritional therapies, including ketogenic diets, showing promise for improving cognitive and behavioral outcomes in affected individuals.

Dr. Jessica Turton is the Director of Ellipse Health and holds a PhD in nutrition awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. Her thesis investigated the use and efficacy of low-carbohydrate diets for diabetes management, with a specific focus on type 1 diabetes. Dr. Turton conducted a clinical trial in collaboration with the CSIRO using a fully online delivery model which enabled Australia-wide participation. The aim of the study was to assess the safety and effect(s) of a nutritionally adequate low-carbohydrate diet on type 1 diabetes management outcomes.Jessica has also co-authored several research articles in leading scientific journals, including "An Evidence-based Approach to Developing Low-carbohydrate Diets in Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review" in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism. Jessica was invited to speak at the American Diabetes Associated Conference in June 2020 to present the evidence for low-carbohydrate diets and nutritional ketosis in the treatment of diabetes and obesity.Jessica has a passion for working with individuals to identify the primary nutritional problems affecting their health and preventing them from reaching their goals. She was the recipient of the Charles Perkins Centre Summer Research Scholarship in 2016/17 where she was part of a team that conducted analyses to investigate the association of industry-funding and results in published studies examining the effect of whole-grain intake for cardiovascular disease prevention. Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon. Ivor Cummins originally completed a Chemical Engineering degree in 1990 (Biochemical Stream, BE(Chem) CEng MIEI), followed by over 25 years in corporate technical leadership and management positions. Ivor’s particular specialty was leading teams in complex problem-solving scenarios.Following less-than-ideal blood test results, he was unable to get solutions from the doctors he consulted. He thus embarked on an intense period of biochemical research into the science of human metabolism. Ivor intensively studied the mechanisms and primary drivers of elevated GGT and Serum Ferritin. This quickly led to an investigation of general causes of inflammation and dyslipidemia.Within eight weeks Ivor had resolved and optimised all of his blood test metrics. Also, he had shed nearly 15kg of body fat with relative ease. As the journey became a fixation he went on to analyse over 200 related papers and studies carried out over the past 5 decades and before.Ivor found that the value of the technical expertise gained during his career to be of paramount importance in this odyssey. Through this investigation Ivor has realised that to be successful in determining root cause and solution in the health arena requires far more than a general medical background. In the following years Ivor has continued his research on the many “root causes” of modern disease, from “cholesterol” through to insulin resistance. He has also given many public talks and chaired interviews with various health experts.A .PDF version of the slides used in this presentation is available here; http://denversdietdoctor.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Ivor-Cummins-The-Pathways-of-Insulin-Resistance-Exposure-and-Implications.pdf Learn more about your ad choices.
