Show Notes
Industrial Talk is onsite at PowerGen and talking to August Bogner, Business Development Manager at EC Power about "On-Site power generation solutions".
Overview
The conversation examined EC Power’s small combined heat and power systems and their potential role in easing grid demand. CHP Solution
Augustdescribed a 24 kW system for U.S. commercial buildings such as hotels, schools, and nursing homes. The system replaces or supplements boilers by producing hot water and on-site electricity from natural gas or propane. Systems are sized primarily around consistent hot-water demand; multiple units can be cascaded where appropriate. EC Powerhas about 20,000 systems worldwide and roughly 100 in North America.
Market Barriers
On-site generation can reduce utility purchases, transmission losses, and grid strain, particularly as electricity demand rises. Economics depend on both electricity and thermal output;Augustestimated potential electricity costs in New England at roughly one-quarter to one-third of utility prices after accounting for heat value. Interconnection approvals and other regulatory requirements remain major deployment barriers. How can U.S. interconnection rules be streamlined for small systems, and when will local manufacturing become viable?
Outline
Participant Background
Augustis from Denmark, lives in Rhode Island, and joined his father’s company in 2021. He gained experience across service, production, research and development, and sales.
Company And Product
EC Powermanufactures small combined heat and power systems and assembles them in Denmark. The systems fit through a standard door, use natural gas or propane, and provide heat plus electricity. The company has 27 patents and is considering U.S. manufacturing after gaining more market traction.
Applications And Economics
Best-fit customers have steady demand for both heat and electricity. Common applications include hotels, schools, and nursing homes. Systems are generally sized to avoid exporting electricity, although net metering is more favorable in some European markets.
Growth And Regulation
Rising demand from data centers, electric vehicles, and heat pumps increases interest in distributed generation. North American growth is constrained by complex grid interconnection requirements. Deployment may take a few months for a ready project, with regulatory approvals often causing the longest delay.
