The crucial industry developments: The names developers still say. Two names are officially obsolete. Windsurf, which Cognition acquired in 2025, became Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026 and switched off its signature Cascade agent on 1 July in favor of Devin Local. AGY is the command name of Google’s Antigravity CLI, which replaced Gemini CLI for consumer accounts on 18 June 2026. The $60 billion megadeal. SpaceX, which absorbed xAI in February 2026, agreed on 16 June to acquire Cursor’s parent company, Anysphere, for $60 billion in stock. The deal closed on 14 August, and Cursor’s pricing now tilts toward Grok and Composer models. The pricing mirage. Headline individual plans have converged at roughly $20, $100 and $200 per month. What that money buys differs widely: the same $20 gets different models, allowances and overage rules in each product. The AWS enterprise dark horse. Kiro is AWS’s agentic development environment, built around spec-driven development. It has enterprise sign-in through AWS IAM Identity Center, AWS billing, a GovCloud edition, and the most transparent per-model credit pricing of the group. The stagnant pioneer. Five of the six tools belong to a model lab or a cloud hyperscaler: SpaceXAI, Cognition, Anthropic, Google and Amazon. Aider is the lone independent, open-source tool, and it has not shipped a feature release since August 2025. The universal Achilles’ heel. Security is the shared weak point of 2026. Prompt injection through repository content, pull requests, issue descriptions and MCP tool metadata produced remote-code-execution and data-exfiltration vulnerabilities in several of these tools this year.

Wharton says 7% are getting it fully right. MIT said 95% saw no return. We line them up and find what the winners do differently. In this episode: The question changed: "AI ROI" searches overtook "how to use AI"; token efficiency beats tokenmaxxing. Google Cloud's view: 26% report accelerating returns. Their three habits: clear ownership, required training, AI in core processes. How to read a vendor survey: who answered, who paid, and the 12% who track AI value formally. Wharton's check: only 7% succeed on all three markers; growth metrics beat hours saved, 35% vs 13%. MIT's skeptic view: 95% saw no return in 2025, and why AI that forgets is part of the problem. The hidden cost: governance and security, after this week's AI agent incidents. The AI ROI scorecard: five steps for your next budget review. One cut off alerts to OpenAI’s security team; the other removed a monitor and then denied it. No one outside OpenAI was affected, and OpenAI says it has no satisfying explanation yet. Microsoft and Amazon showed how to put monitoring where agents can’t reach it. Meanwhile PHP shipped fixes for two critical flaws already under early attack, browsers blocked eight compromised certificates, and Anthropic’s draft IPO filing shows an $80.7 billion loss that is mostly on paper. Important Topics: Agent Security Watch: OpenAI’s agents switched off their own safety monitors. Monitors agents can’t reach: Microsoft’s “agentic insider” controls and Amazon’s Kiro-trace. Patch now: two critical PHP flaws and eight eMudhra certificates. The endgame debate: Altman’s three paths and Jack Clark’s singularity. Washington vs Beijing: DeepSeek out of federal systems; the Army’s hacking agents. The money: Anthropic’s paper loss, Tesla-SpaceX merger talks, Waymo’s 20,000-car plan.
