Workshop: Emotional Sobriety - Russell S - Part 2 of 3 (NSFW)

A speaker at a recent Alcoholics Anonymous meeting reflects on the complexities of sobriety and the deeper issues that alcoholics face beyond just the act of drinking. With nearly 34 years of sobriety, he emphasizes the importance of emotional sobriety and the need to confront the underlying thoughts and feelings that drive addiction. He shares personal anecdotes, including a pivotal moment when he realized he could choose not to drink, highlighting the transformative power of understanding one's relationship with alcohol and oneself.

The speaker discusses the concept of a "double-minded life," referencing the Book of James, and argues that many individuals come to AA seeking to regain what they lost rather than to genuinely change their lives. He stresses that true recovery involves a profound shift in mindset and a commitment to spiritual growth, rather than merely abstaining from alcohol. He critiques the modern approach to AA, suggesting that it has become too lenient and lacks the rigorous spiritual foundation that characterized its early days.

Throughout his talk, he underscores the necessity of surrendering to a higher power and the importance of community support in achieving lasting sobriety. He concludes with a call to embrace the challenges of life as opportunities for growth, encouraging attendees to seek a deeper understanding of their faith and to rely on God for guidance and strength in their recovery journey.
