Walking On Eggshells in Your Marriage? Why Waiting for Him to Change is Keeping You Stuck

The Worthy Wife | Christian Marriage, Walking on Eggshells, Self-Confidence After 50

Show Notes

Christian marriage, walking on eggshells, influence vs control, reclaiming agency

Episode Summary I want to talk to the woman who has been trying to do everything “right” in her marriage… and still feels unsettled. In this episode, I’m addressing something that may feel uncomfortable—but necessary: Christian wives have often been taught only half of the story. We’ve been taught humility, service, patience, and submission. But we haven’t been taught how much power and influence we actually carry within our marriage. So what happens? We begin to believe that our marriage can’t change unless our husband changes. And that belief quietly keeps us stuck—waiting, adjusting, and slowly losing ourselves in the process. This episode will help you see:

Why that belief feels true—but isn’t the full picture How it’s keeping you focused on what you can’t control What it really means to take responsibility (without taking the blame) Where your influence actually lives inside your marriage

If you’ve been walking on eggshells, overthinking your words, or trying to manage your husband’s responses… this conversation will challenge the way you’ve been approaching your role—and open up a different way forward.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode

Why “he needs to change first” feels true—but keeps you powerless The hidden cost of waiting for your husband to respond differently The difference between control and influence in marriage Why taking responsibility does not mean carrying the whole weight How you may be unintentionally abandoning yourself The internal shift that changes how you experience your marriage—even if he doesn’t change

A Key Truth to Sit With “As long as I believe my peace depends on how he responds, I will stay stuck.”

Integration: A Simple Practice for This Week Take a few quiet moments and ask yourself: “Where have I been waiting for him to change… so that I don’t have to change how I’m showing up?” Pay attention to:

Where you hold back Where you over-adjust Where you are trying to manage his reactions

No judgment. No fixing. Just awareness.

If This Episode Spoke Directly to You If you’re beginning to recognize that you’ve been waiting for your husband to change—and you don’t want to keep living in that pattern— I want to invite you into a conversation with me. This is not about fixing your husband. It’s about understanding what is actually within your control, and what would need to shift for you to feel steady, confident, and at peace in your marriage again.

Helper or Enabler? Finding Your Voice as a Christian Wife Carrie introduces a new coaching program for Christian wives who feel they are walking on eggshells, inviting the first 10 women to email for an application to join weekly personal coaching at a founding price of 997 Canadian dollars to learn to speak up with courage and grace without apologizing, shutting down, or trying to control outcomes. In the episode, she asks whether wives are truly their husbands’ helpers or have become enablers who make excuses, buffer consequences, and say yes to avoid conflict, creating codependent and unhealthy dynamics. She encourages wives to show up as purposeful partners, state what they agree or disagree with, set boundaries about what they will and won’t do, and stop seeking approval, sharing how her marriage has helped her grow in confidence and reliance on God. 00:00 New Coaching Program 00:40 Founding Member Offer 02:32 Welcome and Big Question 02:42 Helper or Enabler 06:26 Stop Being the Yes Man 07:51 Your Role in Marriage 08:59 Personal Growth Story 10:04 Stand Alone in Faith 10:54 Invitation and Goodbye

Carrie Allemeersch addresses Christian wives who have been waiting for their husbands to become spiritual leaders and argues that obedience to God should not be put on hold until a husband changes. She distinguishes self-leadership from taking over a husband’s role and uses the biblical example of Deborah to show that a woman’s calling is not dependent on her husband’s actions. She encourages women to pray, serve, prioritize church, cultivate gifts, build family traditions, and create a peaceful home without seeking a “permission slip,” while honoring a husband and respecting his choices. She warns that what is called submission may be fear, urges making a list of personal versus husband responsibilities, and emphasizes faithfulness over controlling others. When an important relationship becomes strained, it is easy to question not only what happened but what your pain says about you. In this episode of The Worthy Wife, Carrie offers a careful way to examine that question without turning grief into another reason to condemn yourself. Loving your family deeply, wanting a relationship restored and grieving limited contact do not automatically prove idolatry. The more revealing question is whether you have given another person the authority to establish your identity, worth or peace. In this episode:

Have you made your husband—or even your marriage—the center of your life? For years, I didn't realize how much of my life was being organized around my husband's happiness, opinions, reactions and approval. Eventually, I had to separate myself from my husband. I don't mean that I left my marriage. I mean that I had to remember something important: My husband and I are two different people. I am not my husband. I am not my marriage. And being a Christian wife does not mean making my husband the reference point for every decision I make. In this episode of The Worthy Wife Podcast, I'm sharing part of my own marriage story and what happened when I stopped trying to manage my husband, protect the marriage at all costs, and keep everyone happy—and put God back at the center of my life. We talk about: • How husband-pleasing can quietly replace God-pleasing• Why making your marriage your highest priority can create fear and pressure• The difference between honoring your marriage and making an idol of it• Why your husband's mood, approval and choices are not yours to manage• What changed when I stopped making my husband my reference point• Why putting yourself at the center isn't the answer either• How your decisions change when you ask, “Does this bring glory to God?”• Why becoming more like Christ—not more like your husband—is the goal• What it can look like to trust God with the outcome of your marriage You can be a loving, faithful Christian wife even when your husband is unhappy with you. You can stop arranging your life around avoiding his anger, disappointment or disapproval. And you can stop carrying responsibility for a marriage outcome that ultimately belongs to God. You and your husband are two different people. Your job is not to become more like him. Your job is to become more like Christ. If you're having a hard time separating who you are from your husband or your marriage, this is the work I do with Christian wives. We untangle what belongs to you, what belongs to your husband, and what needs to be placed back into God's hands—so you can make decisions from faith rather than fear. Does turning the other cheek mean a Christian wife should tolerate hurtful behavior, stay quiet, or avoid setting boundaries in her marriage? A listener recently asked me this after hearing an episode about Christian boundaries. It’s an important question because many Christian women have learned to connect being loving, forgiving, and Christlike with keeping the peace—even when that means ignoring what is actually happening. But what if turning the other cheek and setting a boundary aren't opposites at all? In this episode of The Worthy Wife Podcast, we look at what Jesus modeled when He faced criticism, demands, conflict, and opposition. Sometimes He answered. Sometimes He confronted. Sometimes He remained silent. And sometimes He simply walked away. We’ll talk about Proverbs 15:1 and 1 Peter 3:9 and consider what it means to respond without retaliation while still having clear boundaries. You'll learn why a boundary isn't about controlling your husband's behavior. It's about deciding how you will respond to his behavior. We’ll also explore the difference between being a peacemaker and a peacekeeper, why gentleness doesn't make you responsible for someone else's anger, and why you don't have to defend yourself against every accusation. And I want you to consider one uncomfortable question: When you ask, “But aren't I supposed to turn the other cheek?” are you genuinely asking how Jesus wants you to respond—or are you looking for biblical permission to keep doing what you have done all along: staying quiet, avoiding his displeasure, and calling it love? Turning the other cheek doesn't mean: You may do whatever you want to me. It can mean: What you do doesn't get to decide who I become next. If you're a Christian wife who is walking on eggshells, struggling with guilt around boundaries, afraid of your husband's disapproval, or unsure where loving him ends and taking responsibility for his emotions begins, this episode is for you. If you're ready to stop walking on eggshells and want help sorting out what belongs to you, what doesn't, and how you want to show up in your marriage, I work privately with Christian women through high-touch coaching.
