How is the manosphere encouraging dangerous body trends?

Do you really know?

Summary

The manosphere is promoting dangerous body trends that can have serious health implications for young men. Online communities within this sphere often emphasize an idealized masculine appearance, leading to a phenomenon known as "looks-maxing." This trend encourages individuals to enhance their physical appearance through various means, ranging from benign grooming and exercise to extreme and unsafe practices.

One particularly alarming trend is "ball maxing," which involves injecting substances into the scrotum to increase its size. This practice poses significant health risks, including infection and tissue damage, as the area contains delicate structures that are not designed for such procedures. Additionally, other harmful practices like "bone smashing," which involves striking the jaw to achieve a more angular face, and "gelking," a method aimed at increasing penis size through repetitive pulling, are also gaining traction. These methods lack scientific support and can lead to severe injuries.

Experts warn that the constant comparison to unrealistic body images can exacerbate mental health issues, including body dysmorphic disorder. Individuals struggling with body image concerns are urged to seek professional help rather than resorting to risky behaviors promoted by influencers and online communities. The discussion emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and medical guidance before attempting any body transformation methods.

Show Notes

In some online communities, men are told that attractiveness depends on achieving an extremely muscular body, a square jaw and other supposedly “masculine” features.

And there are impressionable young men out there who end up pursuing those ideals through a trend known as looksmaxxing. As you may have guessed from the name, it means trying to “maximise” your physical appearance. But more extreme communities promote unproven and downright dangerous ways of changing the body.

What’s the connection with the manosphere? When does looksmaxxing get dangerous? Does the manosphere encourage looksmaxxing any other bodily parts? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

Now if you’ve never heard the word fap before, let me spell it out to you. It’s basically an onomatopoeic slang term for male masturbation. According to Business Insider, the term first appeared in a web comic called Sexy Losers in 1999, to indicate the sound of a male character masturbating. An Urban Dictionary definition for the term was then added in 2002, and usage grew from the 2000s onwards.
