Episode 82 – MI at Home
Glenn and Sebastian welcomed Stephen Rollnick, PhD to the podcast to discuss the application of MI to conversations with family members. Steve is a clinical psychologist and Honorary Distinguished Professor in the School of Medicine, Cardiff, UK, and a co-founder of motivational interviewing.
He grew up in Cape Town, South Africa and lives in Cardiff, Wales. He was a practising psychologist in the UK National Health Service for 16 years, and then became a teacher and researcher on the subject of communication and behaviour change.
He has authored and co-authored books on motivational interviewing (Miller & Rollnick, 1991; 2001; 2012), and on applications in health care (Rollnick, Mason & Butler, 1999; Rollnick, Miller & Butler, 2007; 2022), schools (Rollnick, Kaplan & Rutschman, 2016) and sport (Rollnick, Fader, Breckon & Moyers, 2019).
He has published widely in scientific journals and has taught practitioners in many countries and continents. He has retired from his academic career and now focuses on projects in elite sport and healthcare.
Motivational Interviewing at home
Stephen Rollnick explores how the principles of Motivational Interviewing can inform everyday conversations with family members. Rather than turning home life into therapy, he considers how restraint, curiosity and respect for autonomy can help us respond differently when we strongly want someone we care about to change.
The episode looks at conversations with children, partners and other family members, including what may need to change beyond behaviour itself. These ideas connect with Empowerment, Reflective Listening and the Fixing Reflex.
