Today we dive into Job 9, where Job asks how anyone can stand just before God: "How can man be just with God?" Job accepts his friends' premise, then asks whether anyone can truly be righteous before Him. Our good works cannot make us righteous. Only the blood of Jesus cleanses us (1 John 1:7), not a stack of religious checkmarks. Suffering does not necessarily mean God is angry with you. Unseen things can be at work for a larger purpose. Job longs for an umpire between himself and God, a mediator, and this ancient book already points toward Jesus as High Priest. Job was wrong that God mocks the trial of the innocent. God lets Job put Him on trial and answers him. Scripture is unified. Tens of thousands of cross-references all point toward the Messiah.

More from The Bible Explained with Jenn Kokal
Today, we continue in 2 Peter 2, where Peter gives several red flags for spotting false teachers: Red flag #1: walking after the flesh for dishonest gain - Freely you received, freely give. Red flag #2: despising authority - Scripture has plural elders, not a single head pastor. Be like the Bereans. Scripture is the final authority, not any teacher (podcasters included). Red flag #3: slandering the "Dignitaries" - who are the dignitaries, and what Jude 8-9 says about them. Doing good things does not make someone's teaching good. Watch for Balaam's kind of gain.
Jenn continues in Job 8, where Job's second friend, Bildad, speaks up with some big untruths about God and Job: "Shall the words of your mouth be a mighty wind?" Bildad calls Job a windbag. Bildad says Job's children had it coming. Does suffering always mean you sinned? "Many are the afflictions of the righteous." God promises deliverance, not a pain-free life. Just because something is old doesn't mean it's true. Be like the Bereans and judge all things, new and old, according to Scripture. Bildad compares Job to a reed with no water and shallow roots.
*Quick note: In this episode I accidentally said we were reading 2 Peter 2:1-11, but we're actually reading 2 Peter 2:1-9. Sorry about that! Today, we continue through 2 Peter 2:1-9, where Peter warns that false teachers will come into the church: Sometimes the most dangerous heresy is wrapped in a very pretty Christian bow. Why does a church hierarchy with no accountability set a church up for failure? "It shall not be so among you." Jesus calls church leaders to be servants. "Lord, Lord." Who are Jesus' scary words in Matthew 7 really directed to? Noah and Lot didn't go along with the crowd. How can we be like them?
In today's episode, Job stops answering his friends and starts talking to God: Job turns from his friends to God and prays out loud, no matter what they think. "Months of misery." The book of Job isn't a two-week story. "Am I a sea or a sea monster?" What the Leviathan meant in Job's day. What does it mean to curse God? Did David turn Job's "What is man?" complaint into praise in Psalm 8?
Jenn finishes 2 Peter 1, where Peter explains why we can trust what he taught: Peter won't stop reminding us about Jesus, even though we already know. He considered it negligent not to speak about Jesus. Evangelism isn't everyone's gift, but it's everyone's calling. How can you share your faith? Peter knows his "tent" is coming down soon. What does Peter mean by "tent"? "We didn't follow cunningly devised fables." Peter saw the Transfiguration himself. 2 ways to spot a false prophet.
