Sleep Theories

Show Notes

Canewdon Church, England's most haunted witch village, and the legend of the Devil's thirteenth bell. Settle in for a dark, atmospheric sleep story set at St Nicholas' Church in Essex. Folklore says six witches will always live in Canewdon as long as the tower stands, and anyone who runs anticlockwise around the church three times on Halloween will summon the Devil. In 1998, three friends test the legend at midnight. The bell rings thirteen times, the camera stops recording, and a woman who died decades ago looks straight into the lens. What follows draws on the real history of Rose Pye, the Essex witch trials, the Witchfinder General, and the cunning man George Pickingill. It leads to a sealed chamber beneath the tower and something that wears the faces of the people you love.
