Summary

Charles "Lucky" Luciano, a pivotal figure in the history of organized crime, is credited with transforming the American mafia into a powerful and modern criminal enterprise. Born Salvatore Lucania in Sicily, he emigrated to the United States as a child and quickly became involved in illegal activities, including protection rackets and gambling. Luciano's rise to power culminated in the establishment of the National Crime Syndicate, which allowed various gangs to collaborate rather than compete, significantly increasing their profitability.

Luciano's influence peaked during the 1930s when he orchestrated the murders of rival mob bosses Joe Masseria and Salvatore Maranzano, effectively consolidating power among the Italian crime families. He founded the Commission, a governing body for the mafia, which facilitated decision-making and reduced violent turf wars. Despite his criminal success, Luciano's luck ran out when he was convicted on multiple counts of compulsory prostitution in 1936, leading to a lengthy prison sentence.

World War II provided an unexpected opportunity for Luciano, as the U.S. government sought his assistance to prevent sabotage on the docks. His cooperation led to a commuted sentence in 1946, but he was deported to Italy, where he attempted to maintain control over his criminal empire from afar. His later years were marked by increasing restrictions and surveillance by Italian authorities, as well as power struggles within the mafia. Luciano died in 1962, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape organized crime in America.
