At what point should you stop using treats in dog training? If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re relying too much on food, or worried that your dog will only listen if you’ve got snacks in your pocket… this episode is going to completely shift how you think about reinforcement. In this episode, we’re diving deep into the science - unpacking when it’s essential to keep using food (especially with nervous or sensitive dogs), when it’s appropriate to start reducing it, and how to do that in a way that actually makes behaviour stronger, not weaker. We’ll explore the powerful role of counter conditioning, why food is so much more than just a reward in those moments, and how removing it too early can quietly undo your progress. And then… we’ll zoom out and look at one of the most fascinating principles in behavioural science: variable reinforcement. The same mechanism that drives habits, addictions, and even social media scrolling… is something you can use intentionally to build incredibly resilient, reliable behaviour in your dog. In this episode, you’ll learn:
Why it’s not time to phase out treats if your dog is still feeling unsure, nervous, or reactive The difference between using food for behaviour vs. using it to change emotional responses What counter conditioning really is, and why consistency matters more than reducing treats When and how to introduce a variable schedule of reinforcement Why reducing rewards (at the right time) can actually make behaviour stronger What an extinction burst is, and why it’s a good sign - not a problem How to start moving from food rewards to real-life: functional reinforcement The biggest mistake dog owners make when trying to ‘wean off’ treats

👉 Join here: The Listen Dog Training Online Club Your dog isn't just learning when you're actively training them. They're learning all day long… and some of the behaviours they're practising are probably not the ones you intended to teach. In this episode, we're going inside the canine brain to explore how habits actually form, including the role of the basal ganglia, dopamine, reinforcement and repetition. We'll look at why dogs can become really good at behaviours we wish they'd stop doing, and how to use smarter repetition and reinforcement to build the behaviours you actually want. You Will Learn:
Why does your dog completely forget you exist the second they spot a pigeon, squirrel, rabbit or another dog? In this episode, we’re getting properly into the behavioural science behind motivation, dopamine, reinforcement, anticipation and reward prediction, and looking at why certain environmental triggers can become so compelling for dogs. We’ll explore why dopamine is about far more than simply pleasure, how behavioural sequences like chasing and searching can be inherently reinforcing, why your dog’s idea of a high-value reward changes depending on the context, and how the environment is effectively training your dog 24/7. But most importantly, we’ll look at what you can actually DO with this information, and how you can use movement, sniffing, exploration, play, environmental access and your dog’s own individual preferences to become a more relevant and reinforcing part of their world.
In this episode of The Walk & Talk, we’re diving deep into the fascinating world of canine scent: exploring the idea of the umwelt, why your dog’s sensory experience of the world is fundamentally different from yours, what is actually happening when they stop to sniff, and why that seemingly insignificant sniff at the lamppost might be one of the most cognitively rich things they do all day. And then we bring it back to dog training! Because once you understand just how much information your dog can gather through their nose, you might start looking at walks, enrichment, working breeds, busy dogs and even behaviour in a completely different way. You will learn:
September isn’t just a time for new school terms and fresh stationery… it’s also a brilliant opportunity to bring a little more structure and focus to life with your dog. As summer winds down and autumn begins, why not use that fresh-start feeling to reset your training routine? In this episode, we’re looking at why this time of year can be so effective for getting back into training, including the science of learning, the role of structure and predictability, and how to create realistic goals that you can actually stick to. You’ll come away with practical, science-led ideas and simple training homework to help you build more focus, calmness and connection with your dog. Sometimes, the biggest transformation in dog training doesn’t come from finding the perfect technique… It comes from changing the way you see your role. In this episode, we’re exploring the powerful identity shift from being your dog’s corrector to becoming their coach. We’ll dive into why behaviour is communication, how to become more proactive in your training, why outdated ideas around dominance and control don’t create the relationship we actually want, and how to become the person your dog looks to for guidance. This is a deep-dive into building trust, confidence, connection, and real-life reliability with your dog. In this episode, you'll learn: ✨ The difference between correcting behaviour and coaching your dog ✨ Why your dog’s behaviour is information - not a personal challenge ✨ How to stop viewing your dog as difficult and start understanding what they’re communicating ✨ Why proactive training is more powerful than constantly fixing problems ✨ What true leadership looks like without outdated dominance ideas ✨ How to build a relationship based on trust rather than control ✨ How your own mindset affects your dog’s learning ✨ How to become a more confident and effective trainer ✨ How to become the person your dog naturally chooses to listen to 🚀 Ready to take this work to the next level?
