Refuge and Reckoning

FRESH Official Podcast

Show Notes

Look around at the mess the world's in today – wars, corruption, greed, injustice. In light of all that, on the off chance that God does exist, on a scale of 0 to 10, how much do you agree with this statement: God is good?

In the late 1940s, after the horrors of World War II, cities lay in ruins, millions were displaced, the world's moral compass seemed broken. Yet out of that devastation came something extraordinary – the Marshall Plan. Rather than crush their enemies, nations like the U.S. poured immense resources into rebuilding Europe and Japan.

That decision turned destruction into restoration – mercy instead of vengeance. That's just a faint glimpse of how God works:

Nahum 1:7-8 The LORD is good. He is a safe place to go to in times of trouble. He takes care of those who trust him. But he will completely destroy his enemies. He will wash them away like a flood and chase them into the darkness.

The Old Testament prophet, Nahum, wrote that to a people terrorised by Assyria – the empire that had crushed Israel with unspeakable cruelty. To His chosen people, God promised both refuge and reckoning: protection for those who trust Him, destruction for those who oppose Him.

It's still true today. To those who run to Him, He is safety and peace personified. But to those who set themselves against His ways – greed, violence, pride – His justice will come like a flood.

So, on your own scale today – how good is your God? Your answer will tell you a lot about where you'll be standing when the storm breaks.

That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.
