The Croatoan team creates trouble at the site of an explosion that happened ten years ago, in an attempt to capture one of the machines. Ellie and her team are forced to abandon their own plans in order to rescue the civilians trapped in the middle.
Ellie and Amelia recruit D.B. Cooper by snatching him from midair. But he has his own plan for his life. Dr Croatoa announces his surprising new recruits to the Retreat, forcing Ellie to change her plans for the team. Virginia begins training with Yasuke, but has to deal with her father.
Ellie and Amelia journey to feudal Japan to recruit the African Samurai Yasuke, but they have to deal with his own very different plans and with a stowaway aboard the ship. Meanwhile, Dr Croatoa rescues Elizabeth Bathory from her castle but his plan hinges on her reluctant Captain of the Guard.
Dr. Eleanor Reed, a scientist from a future run by machines, has built a time machine to change her world and free it from the machines and the Regime that runs them. She needs to collect heroes from the past, ones who disappeared, so that taking them away won't change history. For her first recruit, she'll need a pilot to fly her time machine. She needs Amelia Earhart.
