REPLAY | Wikipedia Co-Founder: Studying Hollywood Cults Led Me to Christianity | Larry Sanger | Ep 1143

Relatable with Allie Beth Stuckey

Summary

Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia and president of the Knowledge Standards Foundation, shares his journey from skepticism to Christianity. Raised in a Lutheran household, Sanger's early curiosity about philosophical questions led him to agnosticism during his teenage years. He became a prominent figure in the online encyclopedia movement, helping to establish Wikipedia, but his philosophical inquiries continued to challenge his beliefs about God and morality.

Throughout his academic career, Sanger encountered various influences, including discussions with a Christian student during graduate school that prompted him to reconsider his agnostic stance. His perspective shifted further as he experienced personal milestones, such as marriage and fatherhood, which made him question the foundations of his ethical beliefs. Observing the rise of a more dogmatic atheism also contributed to his reevaluation of faith, as he noted a contrast between the behavior of some atheists and Christians.

Sanger's exploration of the Bible began in late 2019, driven by a desire to understand the moral implications of his beliefs. He engaged deeply with scripture, using study tools to grasp theological concepts, which gradually led him to accept the existence of God and the significance of Jesus Christ. His journey culminated in a recognition of the need for a savior, although he acknowledges that his understanding of Christianity is still evolving. Sanger expresses a commitment to continue seeking answers and engaging with others on their spiritual journeys.

Show Notes

In today's episode, we sit down with Wikipedia co-founder, philosopher, and writer Larry Sanger to discuss his journey and testimony as he went from being an atheist to believing in God through reading the Bible. He tells us about his upbringing in the Lutheran Church and how his philosophical questioning led him to become an atheist. Larry also discusses how his own philosophical writings later in life led him to start questioning his beliefs and how he watched atheism become almost dogmatic in nature. We talk about how he read the Bible for the first time and how that led him to understand God and salvation through Jesus Christ. Larry's testimony shows us how even the hardest philosophical questions can lead someone to Christ.

Incrementalism? Or abolitionism? CEO of Alliance Family Services Ginna Cross sits down with Allie to explore the growing divide among pro-lifers on how to rid the world of abortion. Should equal protection for unborn children extend to legal consequences for not only the people who perform abortions, but also for the women who knowingly obtain them? What is the culpability of those who pressure others to pursue abortion, and what does true compassion toward both mother and child look like? This is an important and challenging conversation about the legal, moral, and theological questions at the heart of the pro-life movement.

With midterm elections just around the corner, it’s critical to understand a dangerous ideology gaining ground among young people. In this episode, Allie clearly explains what socialism actually is — and how figures like Zohran Mamdani and AOC package it to sound appealing. She contrasts their rhetoric with the historical record in places like the Soviet Union, China, Cambodia, and Zimbabwe. Allie also addresses the claim that “Jesus would be a socialist,” showing from Scripture why that idea is false and how socialism stands in direct opposition to biblical Christianity.Do you have a question for Allie? It’s that time of year! Christians have long debated what participation with Halloween should look like. There are many views on the topic spanning from total avoidance to full participation. Allie looks at each position and what the bible says in order to have a well rounded view of the highly contentious holiday. She also looks at how it can be redeemed and even be an opportunity to share the gospel. Halloween is an issue that Christians have liberty to differ on, however it is one that deserves careful consideration by asking not only what is right and what is wrong, but what is best.

Kighley Medrano was born and raised in the Mormon church. She joins Allie to share her story and how conversations with a friend who left Mormonism led her to saving faith in Jesus Christ. Kighley makes videos sharing her story in the hope of exposing the problems with Mormon theology and sharing the truth of Christianity. Today she discusses the Satanic underpinnings of Mormonism and compares the Mormon gospel to the true gospel seen in Scripture. This is an enlightening and equipping episode for those who grew up LDS and for Christians preparing for conversations with those in the LDS church.
