What does it take to leave stable, high-level corporate careers and build a thriving, family-first property portfolio from scratch? In this episode, host Helston Otley sits down with husband-and-wife duo Phil and Jeanette Jones from JPG Properties to discuss their transition from construction management and corporate restaurant operations into full-time property investing. Phil and Jeanette share how they raised private investor funds naturally through social media transparency, the exact software they use to track falling-through deals, and why personal lifestyle goals must always dictate your business strategy—not the other way around. Plus, they break down their goal-setting routine inspired by Jim Rohn and how endurance training builds the mental toughness needed for long-term real estate success.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Align business with personal life first: Design your business around your family and lifestyle goals rather than sacrificing family time to build a company.
Consistency builds investor trust naturally: Consistently sharing your property journey on social media attracts private finance without hard selling.
Leverage deal-tracking software for second-chance acquisitions: Using automated tools helps you jump on lucrative deals the moment bank valuations fail or sales fall through.
Endurance mindset translates directly to business resilience: Applying lessons from long-distance running builds the mental fortitude to push through tough market cycles.
Focus on high-leverage tasks to buy back your time: True productivity isn't about staying constantly busy, but rather prioritising high-value actions that move the needle.

More from Property & Purpose
Hesitating to speak with potential investors often stems from cultural taboos around money or the false belief that self-funding is enough. Relying solely on personal cash guarantees hitting a ceiling, while learning to raise private capital ensures sustainable portfolio growth. Overcoming the fear of pitching requires shifting focus away from asking for cash toward presenting what that capital actually achieves. Knowledge and funding carry equal weight in any deal, making it essential to stop putting investors on pedestals or accepting misaligned capital. Harnessing the healthy fear of protecting private funds drives thorough due diligence and transparent contingency planning when valuations fall short. Discover practical strategies for positioning yourself as a trusted local expert and building lasting investor relationships.
A sudden redundancy and maternity furlough in 2020 sparked a complete shift from working behind a salon chair to building a thriving business and property portfolio. Developing a resilient mindset, embracing creative finance models like lease options and rent-to-rent, and surrounding oneself with experienced mentors proved that financial independence is achievable from any background. Real property success relies heavily on treating investments like a true business—understanding P&L sheets, mastering cash flow, avoiding over-leveraged rents, and stepping up into local networking circles.
