Frozen in Time: Solving the Dyatlov Pass Mystery with Science | Disaster Strikes

The Crux True Survival Stories

Show Notes

In February 1959, nine skilled winter hikers vanished in Russia's Ural Mountains during what should have been a routine expedition. When rescuers found their tent weeks later, it had been slashed open from the inside, and the bodies were scattered across the mountainside—some nearly naked in minus 25-degree temperatures, some with crushing injuries, one missing facial features. For over six decades, theories ranged from secret military tests to supernatural forces, but no explanation could account for all the evidence. Now, groundbreaking scientific research offers a chilling answer that's somehow more unsettling than any conspiracy: the mountains themselves. Join us as we reconstruct that fatal night and explore how experience, training, and determination sometimes aren't enough. 01:03 Disaster Strikes Intro 01:43 Night of Terror 03:42 Meet the Expedition 04:38 Soviet Hiking Grades 06:16 Team Members and Yuri Talk 08:47 Trek Begins and One Turns Back 11:20 Camp on Dead Mountain 12:58 Search Finds Slashed Tent 15:49 Bodies by Cedar and on Slope 19:00 Ravine Discovery and Autopsies 23:24 Radiation and Case Closed 27:45 Avalanche Theory Reopened 28:27 Modeling the Slab Avalanche 31:49 How They Tried to Survive 35:12 Why the Mystery Persists 39:55 Final Reflections and RIP Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! On a clear July evening in 2025, a seasoned hunting guide scouting for mule deer in Utah's Uinta Mountains felt his side-by-side begin to tilt at zero miles an hour. Minutes later, he lay on a steep slope with a shattered leg, his satellite messenger, radio, and phone scattered somewhere in the darkening brush, and only one companion left. What followed was an arduous journey of cold creek crossings, yipping coyotes, and a light no bigger than a quarter. Jake Schmitt thought he understood his dog, but somewhere in the dark, Buddy started doing something Jake still can't explain.

On May 24, 1998, a Canadian climber lost his footing on Denali's West Buttress and disappeared down the north face toward the Peters Glacier. Two National Park Service volunteer rangers were a hundred feet ahead of him. One of them radioed for permission to go down and look, got it, and started descending — and somewhere on that slope a decision was made that two separate federal investigations would spend the following year trying to explain. What happened next left one man clipped to a single ice screw in a storm, with no radio, waiting to find out whether anyone knew where he was. Thirteen days later, on the same stretch of ridge, it happened again.
