In this documentary, Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan explores the historical origins of the Shia and how the term Ash-Shia which linguistically means “a group” came to represent particular theological movements within Islamic history. Ustadh also discusses early narratives surrounding the figure of Abdullah ibn Saba and the emergence of ideas such as Al-Wasiyyah (the claim that leadership after the Prophet ﷺ was divinely appointed to Ali ibn Abi Talib) and Ar-Raj‘ah.

Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan also highlights several groups historically associated with Shi‘a sects including the Saba’iyyah, Ghurabiyyah, Nusayriyyah, Qaramitah, Druze, and Isma‘iliyyah, while briefly touching on their beliefs and historical developments. The lecture serves as an introduction to a broader series that will examine the historical events after the passing of the Prophet ﷺ and explore the beliefs of the largest Shi‘a group, the Imamiyyah Ithna ‘Ashariyyah.
