Young People Lead New Wave of Americans Unaware of Their Hypertension | MedPage Today Results from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycles, spanning the years 2013 to 2023, showed a significant proportion of adults having hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol, continued to self-report being unaware and never diagnosed. Proton Pump Inhibitor Use and Incident Hypertension in Menopausal Women | Journal of the American Heart Association Journal of the American Heart Association June 2025. Prilosec/Omeprazole, Nexium, Prevacid, Protonix. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the treatment of choice for conditions such as esophagitis and peptic ulcer disease, and they are among the most prescribed medications in the United States. In 2016, one of the PPIs was dispensed more than 70 million times in the United States. Inappropriate PPI use either due to prolonged use or lacking an appropriate indication has been linked with several adverse events such as bone fractures, pneumonia, and kidney damage, especially in older people. Also Osteoporosis, weakened immune systems, higher risk of gut infections and dysbiosis, protein deficiency and deficiencies of B12, iron, magnesium, and other minerals. Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent vasodilator that plays a critical role in blood pressure (BP) regulation.7 Recent studies have shown the importance of the nitrate–nitrite–NO pathway in the production of NO. The conversion of nitrite to NO in the stomach is dependent on the presence of gastric acid.8 PPIs are highly effective in suppressing gastric acid secretion and are hypothesized to affect NO production from nitrate/nitrites.
