Weird Darkness: Paranormal & True Crime StoriesShow Notes
Nine-year-old Walter Collins headed out to the movies in Los Angeles on March 10th, 1928, and didn't come home. Five months later the LAPD handed his mother a boy who'd turned up in Illinois and said it was Walter, and Christine Collins told them he wasn't her son, but Captain J.J. Jones sent her home with him anyway to try him out. About three weeks later she came back with Walter's dental records, and Jones had her locked in the psychiatric ward of Los Angeles County General Hospital. Ohio, Alabama and Idaho searched five men for veins in seven years, starting in 2017, and then sent them back to their cells alive. Alabama came back for two of them, Alan Miller and Kenneth Smith, with a mask and a nitrogen line, and the morning after Smith died, its attorney general called the first nitrogen execution in history "textbook". In between, John Grant convulsed and vomited on Oklahoma's gurney, and Joe Nathan James spent three hours behind Alabama's curtain.
Soon after 1870, at a boarding school near London, the Latin master makes a noise in his throat and rushes out of the room partway through marking an exercise, and when the boys go up to his desk, they count seventeen papers from a class of sixteen; the extra one, written in red ink in a hand none of them knows, says, "If you don't come to me, I'll come to you." One of the boys keeps it, and when he takes it out of his locker that afternoon, the writing is gone.
A broke freelance journalist talks his way into a night alone in the cellar of Marriner's Waxworks, sitting with his back to the wax figure of a Paris throat-cutter the police never caught.
Just over a week ago, Terry McKinnon caught up with Harriet Hartman in a motel room and put bullets into her chest, and she barely flinched; she had him by the throat before she tossed him aside and told him to go home. Now he's driving into Eastgate with a gun in his pocket and a wooden stake he made himself, because that seaside town full of boarded-up houses is the only one around where she's never killed anyone.
On Halloween night in Grove City, Ohio, Lucy Buxton's dad drives her and Shawn Dyer to Gantz Park with two flashlights and a thirty-minute limit, so they can look for the Blood Bats, which legend says come out only on this one night of the year and trace back to Archibald Rhysand, a Union soldier who was rumored to eat bats on the battlefield. Two teenage boys got to the park first that night, with a pair of pumpkins and a handful of firecrackers, and their car is still sitting in the lot.
