Zohran Mamdani has spent the past few days expanding his profile from New York mayor to national political and cultural force. On October 19, at The People’s AI Assembly at Webster Hall, Mamdani appeared with actor and activist Ilana Glazer and attacked Washington’s approach to artificial intelligence as a complete abdication of federal law, according to AI Weekly. He argued that powerful technology companies should not be allowed to regulate themselves and pointed to his own administration’s ban on AI use in elementary and middle schools, along with disclosure rules for AI generated real estate images.

The appearance also produced a concrete policy commitment. La Voce di New York reports that Mamdani endorsed state legislation turning Governor Kathy Hochul’s temporary data center moratorium into permanent law. Asked by Glazer whether he would call on Hochul to sign the measure, Mamdani answered yes. That places him squarely in the growing debate over the energy, environmental, and labor consequences of artificial intelligence infrastructure.

On October 19, the city began distributing free dog and cat food through 22 food pantries across all five boroughs. Yahoo News reports that the program represents a 500,000 dollar city investment and is designed to help families avoid choosing between feeding themselves and feeding their pets. The initiative could become a lasting signature of Mamdani’s affordability agenda because it extends his administration’s social safety net into an unusually personal corner of household life.

Mamdani is also campaigning for Governor Kathy Hochul. The New York Times reports that his first video for her reelection effort calls Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman a bad apple and uses Mamdani’s familiar direct to camera style. On X, Mamdani emphasized that his campaign videos are filmed without artificial intelligence and urged voters to note the November 3 election date and the October 24 through November 1 early voting period.

Ground News reports that Mamdani has separately called Blakeman’s rhetoric racist and bigoted, after Blakeman accused him of failing to protect Jewish New Yorkers. Those claims and counterclaims remain political allegations, not independently established findings.

Finally, Mashable reported criticism of Mamdani’s recent Navratri message, with some Hindu users calling its treatment of related festivals ignorant. The backlash is unconfirmed as a broad public trend, but it shows how closely his social media language is being scrutinized.
