The Ninth Doctor and Rose Back for New Adventures PLUS All the Who News
The Doctor Who Big Blue Box PodcastShow Notes
Hey, Who fans and welcome to Episode 428. Twenty years after their on-screen adventures, Chris Eccleston and Billie Piper are re-united for more trips in the TARDIS over at Big Finish. I've got all the details in this episode! "Back to the Powell Estate, where the Doctor’s past returns to haunt him, and out into the universe where enemies old and new are waiting... " In other news, Doctor Who has landed its first-ever Emmy nomination — amazingly, after more than 60 years — in the category for Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming. (Not something I ever expected to tick off on the "Doctor Who Emmy Nominations Bingo Card"!) Writer Mark Gatiss dropped some interesting thoughts on making Doctor Who in a recent interview, touching on the use of nostalgia, with this cutting line: "...It’s part of the reason we’re in the mess we are...". Oof! It's a great interview and Mark has many of us, myself included, nodding along. We've also got a few other bits worth shouting about: the upcoming spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea is rumoured to arrive this autumn, there's a fun interview with Ncuti Gatwa (including a random run-in with Matt Smith), and some insights from BBC Studios' Commercial CEO Tom Fussell on their continued commitment to the show. Oh, and some tasty merch is on the way — including the long-awaited Season 13 Blu-ray Collection. Sonic Screwdriver at the ready. Let’s go. Hey, Who fans and welcome to Episode 432. After a few quiet months, Garry is back with a solo news catch-up, starting with The Satan Pit Extended Cut heading to cinemas on Doctor Who Day and a trip into our Compendium to revisit when we first covered the story back in 2018. The BBC’s competitive tender has drawn bids from Hat Trick Mercurio, World Productions, two BBC Studios labels and STV Studios, whose pitch could take production to Scotland for the first time. We also pick through what Russell T Davies reveals about the Disney years in his memoir, The Queerest of Folk. Elsewhere, Torchwood turns 20, so we look back on reviewing every series, and the first look at Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew on CBeebies has drawn a rare reaction from fandom in the form of a collective shrug. Hey, Who fans, and welcome to The Big Blue Box Roundtable. After a couple of months away, the July roundtable brings Garry, Matt, Maria, and Harry back together to pick up everything that's happened since we last recorded. And there's been a lot. We kick off with a proper recap of the DWAS Capital event down at the Crowne Plaza, covering everything from Paul McGann practically joining us for breakfast to Matt's unexpected few minutes talking bacon and sausages with Dan Starkey, Tommy Knight and Gary Russell's "Return to Bannerman Road" panel, the Saturday night auction, and why Tony Jordan deserves a massive thank you for what he's built over the years. Then we get to the news that dropped while we were away. The Christmas special is gone, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf are out, and the show is going to tender. We each share where we landed on all of it, and the feelings are not exactly simple. There's disappointment about the way it was handled, frustration about being lied to about a script that apparently never existed, a strong reaction or two to RTD's Instagram post, and the broader question of what happens to Doctor Who now and who might bring it back. We also end up in a full debate about whether filming in Wales has run its course, and the conversation goes somewhere nobody expected. Want to check out our podcast about Blake's 7? Hey, Who fans! Something a little different is landing in your feed today. This is the very first episode of Federation Strike: A Journey Through Blake's 7, a Blake's 7 podcast hosted by us. The show follows lifelong superfan, Adam, and newcomer, Garry, as we work through every episode of the classic BBC sci-fi series together. If you've ever been curious about Blake's 7 but never made the jump, this is a great place to get acquainted with the show. Think of it as the Big Blue Box format applied to a show that shares a lot of DNA with classic Doctor Who — same era, same BBC corridors, same Dudley Simpson on the music — but with a darker edge and its own distinct identity. This first episode covers The Way Back, the 1978 series opener written by Terry Nation. The podcast is well underway, and at the time of this episode going out, we're currently halfway through reviewing Series 2, with plenty more still to come. Thank you for checking out our other podcast, and we'd love you to come along on our journey through Blake's 7.
