After their marriage deteriorated during a long separation, Fu Weiwei stabbed her British husband, Michael Simpson, to death in Shanghai after discovering him with his new partner. Following the tragedy, Michael's parents engaged in a protracted legal and financial struggle against the Fu family, who had moved the couple's two young children to a remote village and demanded significant payments for their release. Although the grandparents eventually secured their granddaughter's custody through a financial settlement, their grandson remains in China as they continue working into their seventies to fund the ongoing effort to reunite the siblings in the United Kingdom.
