Show Notes

In episode 315 of the Glass and Out Podcast we collaborated with Hockey Calgary for their 4th Annual Leadership Day and sat down with Flames Head Coach Ryan Huska. Huska is a good friend of The Coaches Site, having previously joined Glass and Out. He's also presented multiple times at our TCS Live event. This was a special interview complete with diagrams to showcase some of the drills and teaching progressions he's used throughout his career. It offered a fascinating look at how an NHL coaching staff manages the limited practice time they have throughout the season to prepare their team. There is a lot coaches can learn from Ryan's drills in terms of efficiency in delivering a message. Every detail is thought out and no time is wasted. Listen as he shares his favourite drills for breakouts, encouraging competition, why the skill of passing is often missing in today's player, and why it's curcial to always celebrate the small and big wins with your team.

Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/f6-3hSUAFPw In Episode 353 of the Glass and Out Podcast, we welcome John Lind, the Swedish Ice Hockey Association's Director of Education and Research. Sweden has approximately 62,000 registered hockey players, and last season, there were 109 Swedish-born players in the National Hockey League. So, on a per-capita basis, Sweden produces one NHL player for every 568 registered players. By contrast, the United States produces one NHL player for every 1,682 registered players, while Canada produces one NHL player for every 1,073 registered players. This data certainly suggests that Sweden has a secret sauce when it comes to developing elite hockey talent. Lind has been a central figure in shaping Sweden's player development methodology, and as you're about to hear, many of the country's practices are outside the box but have resulted in arguably the most productive development model in our sport. Listen as he shares the importance of coaching effort over outcome, how to evaluate and improve a player's ability to scan, and Sweden's model for youth development through small ice. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/pHk81vzOFdY In Episode 351 of the Glass and Out Podcast, we welcome back reigning Stanley Cup champion Rod Brind'Amour. The Hurricanes' eight-year journey to a championship could best be described with one word: conviction. In his first seven seasons as the Head Coach, the Canes qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs each season. This included advancing past the first round on six occasions, including three trips to the Eastern Conference Final. Despite not reaching the ultimate goal, owner Tom Dundon elected to stay the course with GM Erik Tulsky and Rod Brind'Amour's vision for a relentless style of play that required every player to buy into the Hurricanes' blue-collar culture. The reward: a Stanley Cup Championship in Year Eight. Listen as he shares how a cinder block became a symbol for a Cup victory, how to implement a high-intensity style of play, and why off-the-puck play is key to trusting young players. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/N0o3zgB5SH0 In Episode 350 of the Glass and Out Podcast, we're joined by the new Head Coach of the Edmonton Oilers, Mike Babcock. While Babcock is one of the most polarising figures in the game, he's also one of the most accomplished coaches in hockey history. He is currently the only coach in the Triple Gold Club, having won a Stanley Cup, Olympic gold, and a World Championship gold. Babcock made his NHL debut behind the bench of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 2002 and took the team to the Stanley Cup Final in his first season. In 2005, he joined the Detroit Red Wings, where over 10 seasons he won the Stanley Cup in 2008. He later coached the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2015 to 2019, helping rebuild the franchise around a young core. You can check out his 2023 TCS Live interview with Elliotte Friedman, where he shares memories from the 2010 gold medal victory for Team Canada. Listen as he shares why fun is the number one goal this year for the Oilers, why player roles are crucial for team structure, and the importance of being direct in your communication.
