The DeFeo Murders and the Amityville Horror - 'I Killed Them All'

Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary

Summary

The tragic story of the DeFeo family murders in Amityville, New York, unfolds with chilling details surrounding the events of November 13, 1974. Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family, including his parents and four siblings, using a .35 caliber rifle while they slept. The crime scene revealed no signs of struggle or noise, leading to speculation about how the family remained undisturbed during the shooting. DeFeo's tumultuous relationship with his father and his history of violence and drug use are highlighted as contributing factors to the horrific act.

Following the murders, DeFeo initially claimed that a mob hitman was responsible but later confessed to the killings, asserting they were in self-defense. His trial in 1975 garnered significant media attention, with the prosecution arguing that he committed the murders for financial gain, particularly to collect on his parents' life insurance. Despite his defense team's efforts to portray him as insane, the jury found him guilty on six counts of murder, leading to six consecutive life sentences.

DeFeo's story continued to evolve over the years, with various claims about the events of that night and the motivations behind his actions. He died in prison in March 2021, leaving behind a legacy of violence and tragedy that has captivated public interest for decades. The case remains a grim reminder of the complexities surrounding familial relationships and the dark undercurrents that can lead to unimaginable acts of violence.

Show Notes

On November 13, 1974, Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr. shot six members of his family in their beds at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, with a .35-caliber Marlin rifle. His mother had told the cleaning woman something tragic was coming. His father had been giving him money and cars for years, and Butch had already pulled a loaded shotgun on him once. At trial he told the jury he killed them all in self-defense and that he was God when he held a gun. The jury came back unanimous. From prison he spent forty-five years blaming his dead sister, inventing a wife, and changing the story with every visitor. Then the house lived again. The Lutz family moved three children in thirteen months after the murders. The book said A True Story. Their lawyer said they made it up. A judge called it fiction. George Lutz trademarked the name and sued his own stepson. The children were five, seven, and ten. Two of them eventually spoke about the man who moved them in. Lori Vallow Daybell, convicted of murdering JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan, is taking her case to the Idaho Supreme Court. Her main argument hangs on Mark Means, a lawyer she hired herself. The man paying Means was Chad Daybell, who referred to him as "my attorney" during a jail call. The judge held that Means couldn't work for two people accused of the same murders and pulled him off her case. She calls that a violation of her right to a lawyer of her choosing, and she wants a new trial because of it. A new trial would drag JJ, Tylee and Tammy's families back through everything, for a woman Arizona already sentenced to two more life terms. Eric Faddis went from prosecutor to defense attorney, and Robin Dreeke retired from the FBI after running its counterintelligence behavioral program. Both join me on whether her appeal can succeed. Elizabeth Holmes sat across from Nathan Fielder in You Can See Everything, the A24 documentary, and said she’d never told a lie. A jury convicted her of wire fraud. A judge gave her 11 years. Holmes signed power of attorney over to Billy Evans before prison. He took her X account, put her face on Times Square billboards, and let strangers make AI videos of her. She asked him to stop. He didn’t. Evans started a company called Haemanthus. The prototype looks like the Theranos Edison. The company says Holmes isn’t involved. Prosecutors told a judge otherwise. Holmes and Evans pitched A24 together on making a documentary about her life. Holmes told Fielder she was doing it for free. What happened when she stepped out of that meeting to check on her baby is at the center of this episode. At the Matthew Farwell trial, the government rested after arguing the former Stoughton cop killed a pregnant Sandra Birchmore and made it look like suicide. His lawyers say it was suicide, and Farwell has pleaded not guilty. Stoughton's own internal investigation found three of its officers had inappropriate relationships with Sandra, and Farwell was one of them. That's the same county as the Karen Read case, where the lead investigator was fired. If he's convicted, Farwell would walk into federal prison wearing both labels inmates hate most: former cop, and a case prosecutors say began when Sandra was 15. He was 27 then, they say, and teaching the Stoughton police youth program. Eric Faddis is a defense attorney who used to prosecute, and Robin Dreeke ran the FBI's counterintelligence behavioral program before retiring. I ask them how much danger those labels would put him in behind bars. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Farwell’s defense called Sandra Birchmore’s ex-boyfriend to show the jury a page from her journal listing reasons to end her life and reasons not to. At the bottom, William Kilroy says, he wrote something in his own hand. He told the jury Sandra talked about wanting to join her grandmother and later threatened to kill herself and name him in the note. The medical examiner’s office kept a bone from Sandra’s neck in a jar for more than three years but never had the broken necklace that was around her neck when she was found. A relative found it on Sandra’s bedroom floor. Prosecutors pressed Kilroy on cross and asked if Sandra was a fighter, if she was resilient. He said yes to each. Everything Kilroy described happened three to five years before Sandra died, and in all of his testimony, Matthew Farwell’s name never came up. The defense calls its psychiatrist Friday. Within a day of Sandra Birchmore being found, prosecutors in the Matthew Farwell trial say, several people told State Police she couldn't have died by suicide. Her death was still ruled a suicide in May 2021. The DA cited that ruling when he decided against charges. The medical examiner who made it testified for the prosecution that she gets her information from other agencies. She also said she was never asked if the death was suspicious. In Massachusetts, her office and the State Police sit under the same state public safety office, and the State Police crime lab tested Sandra's blood. Farwell has pleaded not guilty. His lawyers say Sandra took her own life. Eric Faddis prosecuted cases before becoming a defense attorney, and retired agent Robin Dreeke ran the FBI's counterintelligence behavioral program. Both join me to ask who should get the final word on how someone died. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
