Bible John: Scotland’s Most Notorious Unidentified Killer

BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleMonday, October 26, 2026

Summary

The chilling case of "Bible John," a notorious unidentified serial killer, continues to haunt Glasgow, Scotland, decades after a series of brutal murders in the late 1960s. The killer, who targeted women leaving the Barrel and Ballroom nightclub, is believed to have claimed at least three victims: Patricia Docker, Jemima McDonald, and Helen Puttock. Each woman was last seen leaving the club with a man matching a similar description, and all were found murdered shortly after their nights out.

The investigation into these murders was extensive, involving over 100 detectives and the collection of thousands of statements. Despite the massive manhunt, Bible John vanished without a trace after the last known murder in 1969. The police initially treated the killings as isolated incidents, unaware they were dealing with a serial killer. The case gained notoriety, particularly due to the killer's habit of quoting scripture, which earned him the moniker "Bible John" in the press.

In the years following the murders, various suspects emerged, including a man named John McInnes, who bore a striking resemblance to the composite sketch of the killer. However, DNA testing in the 1990s ultimately cleared him. More recently, Peter Tobin, a convicted serial killer, has been suggested as a potential link to the Bible John case, but investigators have ruled him out. As of now, the identity of Bible John remains a mystery, leaving a chilling legacy in Glasgow's history.
