CARMAN'S CRYPT

Second Sleep | Why You Should Never Wake at 3AM

CARMAN'S CRYPT

Show Notes

For three weeks, Elliot slept better than he had in years. He'd stopped fighting the thing that jolted him awake at 3 a.m. every night and started welcoming it—sitting alone by candlelight in the dead, quiet hour our ancestors oncecalled the watch. Before electric light, people didn't sleep in one unbroken stretch. They slept twice, waking on purpose in the black middle of the night. They had prayers for that hour. They had rules. Elliot was certain the rules were just quaint, fearfulsuperstition. He was wrong about why they kept the watch. He was wrong about what the watching is for. And by the time he understood that the sleeping are safe precisely becausetheir eyes stay shut—that only the waking can see what moves through every house, every night—the tall, patient thing in the hall had already learned his name.

A slow, intimate descent into folk-historical dread, told first-person from inside the candlelight. Some comforts are doors. And some doors don't stay shut.

Sleep well.Keep the watch.

My grandmother died in February and left me forty acres of Arkansas hill ground, a farmhouse built in 1896, and a family cemetery swallowed by greenbrier. There were seventeen graves inside the iron fence. There was one outside it. A rough fieldstone under the white oak read only "E.M. 1902," and beneath that a verse from Job: He that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more.It was ringed by rusted iron stakes that the frost had pushed halfway out of the ground. Every spring of her life, Grandma walked down there with a sledgehammer and drove those irons back in. She never told me why. I pulled them out. Now the graves are sinking, oldest first. Something knocks beneath the floor at night, feeling its way along the foundation of the house it built. My family buriedElias Mercer face down for a reason, and he's been patient for 124 years. A Southern Gothic folk horror story inspired by the Nachzehrer, the German revenant that feeds on its own family. Story by Carman Carrion
