Show Notes
In 1994, Gordon Wardell went on TV claiming a gang of men in clown masks had attacked him, tied him up, robbed a building society… and murdered his wife, Carol. Which is… a lot. Carol Wardell was a devoted sister and daughter, quietly getting on with her life — not the kind of person you’d expect to end up at the centre of something this violent. So how does someone like that end up strangled and left at the side of a road? This week’s episode looks at the life at the centre of it all… and the huge, messy, very public version of events that followed.

This is episode one of Rough Diamond, the new investigative series from Always True Crime. It starts in the 1960s when London was in the grips of a crime spree…rare diamonds are being stolen. The latest is the Colenso diamond. It’s the world’s largest uncut diamond and one of the Natural History Museum’s most important pieces. When a young window cleaner is arrested a few months after the theft, his family is thrown into turmoil. David Knight will protest his innocence until the day he dies, but it’s the start of a much bigger story.
