The Architect Speaks - For Those Who Can No Longer Be Who They Were

Is College / University Worth It? The Degree Was Never About the Job, and the Job Is About to Vanish Anyway (Ep 500)

The Architect Speaks - For Those Who Can No Longer Be Who They Were

Show Notes

Young people were promised a payoff for the degree, and it isn't there, and the anger is real grief aimed at the wrong thing. College was sold as job training, priced like an investment, but its real value was never the job. Two things have torn the disguise off: the credential stopped being scarce, and automation is deleting the entry-level work it was a ticket to, so by the time today's eighteen-year-old graduates, the job the credential trains for may not exist. Stated directly: universities have largely lost their commercial function, and the best they still offer isn't a feature of the credential, it's a feature of the person who committed to something hard and saw it through. So decide, consciously, what you're actually going for: to become a person, or to learn a skill the future will still need, and choose for where the world is going, not where it is now. The Atlas names the pattern running your life in a single sitting. It is built from twenty years in the chair and the thirty-three books of Michael Lauria, a qualified therapist, author and philosophical mythologist. It takes about forty-five minutes, costs nothing, and ends in a written Record of that pattern, drawn from your own words. It is not therapy and not for crisis.

Why are you still afraid of your boss? You laugh at the joke that wasn't funny. Your stomach drops when a meeting invite turns up with no agenda. You answer emails on a Sunday night so nobody thinks you're not committed. That's bowing, and it's a lot older than your job. In this episode I show you where it comes from. The word lord meant the one who guards the loaves, the man who stood between you and what you were going to eat, and now it's whoever holds your livelihood in their hands. You'll hear what the lords did when the peasants walked away after the Black Death, why most people stay in a job that's eating at them when they're free to leave, and what you can do about it, which doesn't have to mean leaving the job. In this episode: 0:00 Why you might still be afraid of your boss 0:57 Where the word lord comes from 2:35 The deal you make with a boss 5:23 What the lords did when the workers walked 6:53 Why you stay when you could leave 8:46 What you can do, and the year and a day If you want to see what has been keeping you where you are, start with the Atlas. Three patterns turn up again and again in the people who find this work: keeping the peace by silencing yourself, over-giving to earn your place, and never feeling good enough. Between them they cover more than half the people who find this work, and if you've been listening for a while, you're very likely living at least one of them. After twenty years as a therapist, I take each one in turn: what it looks like from the outside, what it's like from the inside, where it was put there, and what it costs the adult still living it. Underneath, all three are the same thing: a sacrifice a child made to stay safe, still being made every day by an adult who no longer needs to make it. In this episode: 0:00 Why the same three patterns keep turning up 1:40 One: keeping the peace by silencing yourself 4:22 Two: over-giving to earn your place 7:41 Three: never being good enough 10:05 What all three have in common 11:19 Who this work is for If you heard yourself in one of these three, start with the Atlas. Why do nice people suddenly explode? It's so often the quietest, most agreeable person in the room who blows up without warning, over something small, in a way nobody saw coming. I've sat with those people afterwards as a therapist for twenty years, and they nearly all say the same thing: that wasn't me.

After a real change, the heavy feeling that arrives can mean two very different things, and they show up in the same place in your chest. One is the discomfort of betraying yourself. The other is the discomfort of losing something you’re used to. In this episode I give you a way to tell them apart, so you don’t have to go back to the old arrangement every time it hurts. I’ve been a therapist for twenty years, and I watched this go the same way over and over. Someone would turn down something they had always said yes to, or say a thing out loud that they had kept to themselves for years. The feeling would arrive, heavy and hard to sleep through, and they would take it as proof they had got it wrong. So they went back, the feeling eased, and they decided the easing was the answer. You’ll hear where the alarm in your body came from, why the loudness of a feeling tells you very little, how to tell a clean feeling from a foggy one, the difference between guilt and clarity, three questions to ask yourself, why a right decision still comes with grief, and one small thing to do this week. In this episode: 0:00 Why a real change sends people back to their old lives 1:39 Where the alarm in your body comes from 2:44 Why the loudness of the feeling is not the verdict 3:47 Loss feels clean, self-betrayal feels foggy 5:54 Guilt looks back, clarity looks forward 7:18 Three questions to ask yourself 9:07 Why a right decision still hurts 11:28 What to do this week 12:33 The free place to start If you often can’t tell the difference, start with the Atlas. How do you tell if someone is manipulating you when what they give you feels this good? In this episode I take apart two ways a feeling gets manufactured in you and sold back to you. One is the free breathwork class that leaves a high with the teacher's name on it. The other is the seller who looks up your dog on LinkedIn so that you feel seen. After twenty years as a therapist, I show you how to tell a feeling somebody made in you from something true about your own life. You also get one test to use this week: tell them early that you're not buying, and watch what happens to their interest in you. In this episode: 0:00 The room where adults cry on the floor 2:13 Transference: why the feeling carries his name 6:00 The seller who looked up your dog 9:06 Yes, I run a funnel too 11:29 Manufactured or revealed: the difference 13:11 The test: tell them you're not buying If you want to see what you have been handing over, start with the Atlas.
