Radio Maria UK

Show Notes

Radio Maria welcomed Fr Royston Price CSsR to talk about St Gerard Majella and the relic tour visiting parishes across the country.St Gerard is the much-loved patron of expectant mothers. Born in 1726 in Muro, Italy, he lost his father at 12 and grew up in poverty, yet his heart was always for the poor. He trained as a tailor and worked as a servant to the Bishop of Lacedonia. Even as a young journeyman, he shared his earnings with his mother, the poor of Muro and the souls in purgatory. Turned down twice by the Capuchins because of his frail health, he refused to give up. In 1749, aged 23, he joined the Redemptorists and became a professed lay brother just three years later.Fr Royston tells us why this young saint still speaks to so many people today, what the relic tour means for parishes and families, and how you can take part.About our guestFr Royston Price CSsR is a Catholic priest of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists), based in South London. George Mackay Brown was extremely rare in being an Orcadian who became a Catholic, and for many he is one of the most important Catholic poets and writers of the twentieth century. He rarely left his native islands and, in the words of Seamus Heaney, "transforms everything by passing it through the eye of the needle of Orkney". Sent to interview him for The Times in 1992, Maggie Fergusson became Brown's friend, and he gave her his blessing to write his biography. George Mackay Brown: The Life, published twenty years ago, has never since been out of print, and won four prizes. Brown remains central to Maggie's thinking and faith. In this episode, Fr. Joseph Hamilton shares the text and theological framework of his recent paper delivered at the international Mariology conference, “de Maria numquam satis” in Rome. Addressing recent media interest, Fr. Hamilton clarifies the true scope of his research. Far from being a critique of Artificial Intelligence or modern technology, the paper is a constructive exercise in ressourcement_—putting patristic thought at the service of contemporary theology in direct alignment with the vision of Pope Leo XIV. Tracing the doctrinal continuity from Pius XII’s Munificentissimus Deus to the pastoral horizons of Magnifica Humanitas, this episode explores the Dormition and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary through ancient Eastern and apocryphal sources. Rather than an anti-tech argument, Fr. Hamilton offers a profound reflection on Christian incarnational anthropology. In a digital age, Mary’s bodily assumption stands as a beautiful affirmation of the permanent dignity, sanctity, and vocation of the physical human body. Fr Joseph Hamilton is the Rector of the Domus Australia in Rome, and a priest of the Archdiocese of Sydney Australia. He is Professor of Latin & Patristics at the Pontifical Beda College, Rome. Prior to his appointment at Domus, he served as private secretary to George Cardinal Pell, until the Cardinal’s untimely death. Fr Joseph completed his doctoral studies in Patristics at Christ Church, University of Oxford, and his license at the Patristic Institute “Augustinianum” in Rome. Prior to entering seminary he worked as an investment banker. Having left the economy of Mammon for that of Salvation, he studied at the Pontifical North American College. A native of Ireland, he is a keen but mediocre (his words) surfer, and enjoys reading and cooking. CREDO (currently hosting Patristic Pillars) is a programme that nourishes listeners in their Catholic faith. It airs live on Radio Maria every weekday at 4pm and is rebroadcast at 4am the following morning. Please consider supporting us with a one-off or monthly donation.
