In Return of the Expat: Part Two, Liam speaks with Immy about the reality of leaving the UK state system, building a life and career in Singapore, and eventually choosing to come home. Immy reflects on burnout, ambition, international teaching, leadership, creativity and the strange mix of freedom and pressure that comes with working abroad. She talks openly about the opportunities that helped her grow, the friendships and lifestyle she built in Singapore, and the difficult decision to leave a life she loved. The conversation also explores the part that often gets overlooked: what happens when an expat returns home. From imposter syndrome and job interviews across time zones to reverse culture shock, Tube strikes, moving back in with family and trying to find her place again, Immy shares the emotional reality of returning to the UK after five years away. At the heart of the episode is a question about what we carry with us. Immy describes trying to combine the rigour of her early UK teaching with the freedom, creativity and sense of community she found internationally and how those experiences have shaped the leader she is becoming now.
More from Teach Me Quickly
The world might not need another podcast, but it certainly does need a conversation surrounding education. I believe that teaching is a creative profession, and I want to unlock stories and opportunities to be more creative. As a passionate advocate for teacher autonomy and student voice, this podcast is just another way I am attempting to connect with educators around the world. I am releasing episodes in batches here and there, but you can also find me on other various social media platforms as I attempt to start a renaissance and change education for the better. Welcome to the renaissance, welcome to Teach Me Quickly One More Time.
This is the first episode in a series of mini-episodes about books. Liam takes us on a journey through some of his favourite books from his teenage years to his current reading list. He also pays tribute to his sister, who acts like his own personal librarian. Later he discusses three recent reads: Dungeon Crawler Carl, The Offing and Yellowface.
Return of the Expat: Part One What happens when the life you planned no longer feels like your own? In this episode of Teach Me Quickly, Kelly shares how disappointment, determination and a desire for independence took her from London to China, armed with a BlackBerry, a hand-drawn map and very little idea of what awaited her. From a bewildering first night in Shenzhen to building a life in Shanghai, Kelly reflects on finding freedom abroad, transforming her dance background into a creative teaching practice, and learning to navigate cultures, classrooms and expectations. She also speaks candidly about her time in Singapore, knowing when it is time to leave, and returning to the UK to begin a new journey towards motherhood. A warm and honest conversation about creativity, belonging, resilience and choosing the life you truly want.
