Companies pay Scott Taylor to walk into their own buildings without permission - not by picking locks, but by being pleasant enough that someone holds the door. He says he needs about twenty seconds. Thirty-two years in security, safety and risk, and fourteen years training under the people who wrote the field: Joe Navarro and Robin Dreeke out of the FBI's behavioural programme, Lena Sisco on interrogation, Chase Hughes, Mark McClish and Peter Hyatt on statement and word analysis. He now reads people for government agencies, retailers, recruiters and sales teams. In this conversation with St John Craner he explains what he's actually looking at - your hands, your neck, the speed you talk, where your sentences land - and why the tells everyone thinks they know are the wrong ones. WHAT'S COVERED Truth tellers convey, liars convince
Why people need to see your hands, and what standing with them behind your back says
The sentence he builds into a first meeting to bring the contract forward
The rapport framework that opens people up faster
Where influence stops and manipulation starts
Fear versus surprise, and how to tell them apart on a face

Will AI take your sales job? Dr Diane Hamilton has heard this question before. In the 1980s she was selling computers to people who were sure computers would put them out of work. Her answer now: AI will take over tasks, but what makes you good at sales goes with you, as long as you stay curious enough to adapt. Diane's PhD research looked at emotional intelligence and sales performance. She's a former MBA program chair at the Forbes School of Business, and she has sold computers, pharmaceuticals, ag chemicals and mortgages. She also created the Curiosity Code Index, which measures the four things that shut curiosity down: fear, assumptions, technology and environment. Her new book, Adaptive Curiosity, is about how people keep their sense of purpose as AI changes their work. I asked her why learning new skills isn't enough, what relying too heavily on AI does to your thinking, what kills curiosity in salespeople, and how to stay relevant when the job keeps changing. WHAT'S COVERED · Why AI is an identity problem as much as a skills problem · How she uses AI to shortlist 30,000 contacts down to 50 · The FATE model: fear, assumptions, technology and environment · Why selling the "right" benefit can be the wrong move · How a single line from a boss can teach a team to stop asking questions · Why your assumptions get heavier the longer you hold them · What over-relying on AI does to your thinking · Why curiosity is the oven, not an ingredient · Spotting real emotional intelligence, and building your own self-awareness · Why Diane believes meaning is portable, even when AI takes the tasks you love · Her advice for a new rep starting out Connect with Dr Diane on LinkedIn. Simon Alexander Ong spent nearly ten years in financial services climbing a mountain he never chose. The video he made about it on his 40th birthday has since been watched 4.3 million times. He joined Lehman Brothers a year before it collapsed, couldn't hold a job down for more than three years, and eventually worked out the universe was trying to tell him something. He now coaches leaders, has written for The Guardian and HuffPost, speaks at Google, Salesforce and Microsoft, and wrote the award-winning book Energize. He was also, briefly, the face of a national Barclays campaign - a story that starts with one client saying "you should come and talk to our team." A few of the things we go over: energy over time management, why reinvention costs you friends, how to engineer your own luck, and the two words he's carried since losing his mum at seventeen. Victor Antonio was the CEO of a technology company on a $250,000 base salary. On the ninth of May 2001, at 3:48 in the afternoon, he quit to become a speaker. His first year he made $17,000. He's been back to a corporate job three separate times since, just to refill the tank. Today he charges $20,000 a keynote, has written sixteen books, and has shared the main stage at OutBound with Jeb Blount, Mark Hunter and Anthony Iannarino. Today he takes us through what actually happened in between - the commission that made him leave engineering, the buyer signals almost every rep misses, what's really behind a discount request, and why your last two years of failure are quietly making today's decisions for you. WHAT'S COVERED - The three words that mean a buyer has already said no - Why you're in the conversation when you should be on it - What's behind a discount request, and the one question that exposes it - How your past hijacks a decision before you've made it - The maths on one percent better every day, and what one percent actually costs you - Coming back from a lost deal without beating yourself up - Copy it, bend it, make it yours - the Japanese framework behind his voice Connect with Victor on LinkedIn. Benjamin Dennehy is called the UK's Most Hated Sales Trainer, and in this episode he explains why your mother is sitting in every sales meeting you walk into - and what it's costing you. A trained barrister who was accused of fraud by his own law school weeks before being called to the bar, Benjamin Dennehy now teaches salespeople to do the opposite of everything they've been told: tell the buyer the three reasons they won't buy, hang up halfway through your own voicemail, and go into every meeting hunting for a no. We also talk cold calling, voicemail, objection handling, ghosting, hiring, and the metrics most sales managers are measuring wrong. Fair warning - there's strong language and very little sympathy for anyone who thinks sales is a numbers game. Connect with Benjamin on LinkedIn. Learn more about what he does here. Nir Eyal has spent his career studying why people do what they do - and he'd come to a frustrating conclusion. He'd handed readers the answer to distraction on a silver platter, and most of them still didn't act on it. Knowing what to do wasn't enough. Wanting the outcome wasn't enough. Something further upstream was making the decision. That something is belief: convictions you never consciously chose, inherited from parents, teachers and offhand comments, that you've been lugging around ever since. And they're almost never about the past. They're predictions about a future that hasn't happened yet. I'm no good at this. I'm not ready. It's too hard. In this conversation with St John Craner, Nir walks through the four-question process he runs on himself two or three times a day, and demonstrates it live on a belief he'd carried for decades about his own mother - a story that starts with a bouquet of half-dead flowers and ends somewhere he didn't expect. He explains why a commodities trader was able to undergo a 55-minute operation completely awake with no anaesthesia, and what that reveals about the gap between pain and suffering. And for anyone who has ever said "I'm just not good at sales," he makes the case that nobody is born a salesperson - they've simply had more practice persuading. Nir Eyal is the author of Hooked, Indistractable, and the New York Times bestseller Beyond Belief, which have sold more than a million copies in over 30 languages. A former lecturer at Stanford's Graduate School of Business and a student of BJ Fogg, his frameworks shaped how Silicon Valley thinks about behaviour design. MIT Technology Review called him the prophet of habit-forming technology. Connect with Nir on LinkedIn and follow him on Instagram. Learn more about what he does here. His book Beyond Belief here.
