#65 - How publishers can do better by devs (and still profit) - ft. Tim Bender
Game Developer PodcastShow Notes
This week on the Game Developer Podcast, Hooded Horse CEO Tim Bender joins us to discuss his journey into the world of video game publishing, what he’s learned, and why he feels many publishers aren’t doing right by developers (in a way that ultimately hurts their own business).
The landscape of video game publishing has changed immensely since the heydays of companies like Electronic Arts and Activision Blizzard. Gone are the titans funding big games from big companies, now there are a number of mid-sized publishers supporting mid-sized-and-tiny studios.
But not all publishers are created equal, and even the best-intentioned ones can leave developers in a rough spot. Bender breaks down how Hooded Horse works with its partners and makes the case for why everyone benefits if a publisher prioritizes partnerships over long-term profits.

On this week's episode of the Game Developer podcast, senior editor Bryant Francis chats with Peter Hodges, director for ecosystem strategy for developer platforms at ARM. Peter is a game development veteran who uses his experience in the game-making profession to help developers integrate ARM technology into their workflows. He's currently focused on helping developers understand ARM's new Neural Technology—a collection of on-chip AI techniques that improve frame rate and expand lighting possibilities on mobile devices. You can't talk about the benefits of new dev tools without discussing why developers use them—that's why today's episode doesn't just talk about the possibilities of on-chip AI, but also the impact of art like Hollis Framptons' 1969 7-minute short film Lemon.
