"It's All Going Away!" Why Your Dealership's Software Stack Is About to Collapse (+ What Replaces It) | Mike Gilson, CEO at Conversica

Car Dealership Guy Podcast

Summary

The automotive retail industry is poised for significant transformation as dealership software systems are expected to converge into a single, more efficient platform. Mike Gilson, CEO of Conversica, emphasizes that the current landscape, characterized by fragmented systems and multiple software solutions, will soon be viewed as outdated. He predicts that in five years, dealerships will operate with a streamlined system that integrates various functionalities, reducing complexity and improving user experience.

Gilson highlights the challenges faced by dealerships, including the difficulties of managing multiple Dealer Management Systems (DMS) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools. He notes that many dealerships operate with a patchwork of systems that complicate operations and hinder personalized customer interactions. Conversica's new Ignite platform aims to address these issues by providing a conversational interface that allows users to interact with their data in a more intuitive manner, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and customer engagement.

As the industry adapts to advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, Gilson believes that dealerships must embrace these technologies to remain competitive. He points out that consumer behavior is shifting, with buyers increasingly using AI-driven tools to navigate their purchasing journeys. This evolution necessitates that dealerships not only streamline their internal processes but also enhance their visibility and accessibility to potential customers through modern digital interfaces. Ultimately, the goal is to create a more customer-centric experience that simplifies the buying process and fosters long-term relationships.

Show Notes

Mike Gilson believes that five years from now, the car business will look back and laugh at the software dealers run on today.

Groups with 50 to 100 stores often juggle dozens of different store management and customer management systems, stacked up through decades of acquisitions, and replacing any one of them, he says, is like open heart surgery.

Meanwhile, 64% of car buyers now use AI tools to compare models and payments, yet most dealerships can't even be found by those tools, and he argues the real problem is the scattered data underneath, not a missing AI feature.
