Rooted and Rising Healing After Betrayal

#12: You Are Not a Victim: Reclaiming Your Narrative

Rooted and Rising Healing After Betrayal

Show Notes

In Episode 12 of Rooted & Rising After Betrayal, we continue the identity-to-empowerment arc by exploring what it means to reclaim your narrative after trauma. Building on the last three episodes—your values, your Bill of Rights, and your Identity Statement—this conversation teaches you how to move from “who I am” to “how I choose to live from that identity.” Drawing from Dr. Jake Porter’s Free to Choose model, we unpack how betrayal trauma hijacks the brain, interrupts choice, and pulls you into a story you never agreed to. You’ll learn the difference between being victimized (which is real and valid) and remaining in the victim position, and how reclaiming nuance, agency, and self-direction allows you to shift from survival narratives like “I’m powerless” into identity-led stories such as “I am discovering my choices” and “This is my story now.” This episode also guides you through a powerful “I used to believe… now I know…” journaling practice, a visioning exercise of your future empowered self, and a grounding exploration of how black-and-white thinking evolves into nuanced clarity during healing. You’ll walk away with renewed awareness, expanded choice, and the reminder that every boundary you set and every truth you claim becomes a line in your new story. If this identity and narrative work is resonating, you’re invited to join the waitlist for Hali’s upcoming course—an intimate, step-by-step journey through values, rights, identity, boundaries, and the healing-centered narrative that will carry you forward. Your next chapter starts now—and you hold the pen.

After betrayal, it's natural to want something - anything - that will make you feel safe again. Sometimes the boundaries we set carry a quiet hope that our partner will finally change, and without meaning to, a boundary can become a way of trying to control the outcome. In this episode, we talk about what healthy boundaries actually are in betrayal trauma recovery, how to tell the difference between a boundary and covert control, and why that difference matters so much for your peace. Whether you're staying, leaving, or still figuring it out, this conversation is about your healing.

Betrayal doesn't just break trust in one person. For a lot of women, it quietly rewrites how they see everyone — turning "this person hurt me" into "people aren't safe," or "this man betrayed me" into "men can't be trusted." In this episode, Hali talks directly to the parts of you that have gotten more guarded since betrayal. This episode covers that healing was never dependent on the relationship's outcome, that people (including the person who hurt you) can genuinely change through consistency and accountability — but that trust is earned back over time, not handed over because someone says they're changing. While you're doing the harder work of healing, start noticing the good that's still around you — the people who keep their word, apologize and actually change, show up consistently. Not to prove anything to yourself, just to notice it. Because betrayal doesn't get to decide who you become. You do.

When your partner starts doing things differently — even for a short stretch — it's natural to feel relief, and easy to let your guard down. But a few good weeks isn't the same thing as rebuilt trust, and relaxing your boundaries too early can open the door for old patterns to quietly return. In this episode, we talk about why trusting too soon happens, what it actually costs, and how to validate how hard it is to sit in the discomfort of waiting for trust to be earned over time — not just implied by a good moment.
