Hear the same story twice. Once with a close friend, once with someone from work. This time Shun joins me, and we tell two real stories in casual Japanese first, then in polite Japanese. The first one is about a friend whose marriage is falling apart. The second one is about the time my eye hurt for a week, and what the doctor found. The casual version has zero control. This is how we actually talk with a close friend. You don't need to catch every word. Notice how the vocabulary and the grammar change, and also what we choose to say. With a friend you can just say "dasa" (that's lame). With a coworker you say "shinpai desu ne" (that sounds worrying).
