San Bernardino Train Crash: What Caused This 100mph Runaway Train?
Timeline - World History DocumentariesSummary
A catastrophic train derailment in San Bernardino, California, on May 12, 1989, leads to the deaths of four people and the destruction of several homes. Southern Pacific freight train 7551 East, carrying an estimated 3.5 million kilos of cargo, lost control while descending the steep Cajon Pass. The train, which was supposed to be under control, accelerated to speeds exceeding 160 kilometers per hour before derailing, causing widespread devastation in the town.
Investigators later determined that a series of miscalculations and mechanical failures contributed to the disaster. The train's air brakes, which were supposed to slow it down, overheated and became ineffective, while crucial dynamic brakes were not functioning properly. Additionally, the weight of the cargo was grossly underestimated, leading to a train that was significantly heavier than anticipated. The combination of these factors created a situation where the engineer, Frank Holland, believed he had sufficient braking power, but in reality, he did not.
In the aftermath of the derailment, a gas pipeline running beneath the area was also compromised, leading to a massive explosion just days later, which killed two more people and destroyed additional homes. Investigators found that the pipeline had been damaged during cleanup operations following the train wreck. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that both disasters were preventable and highlighted the need for improved safety protocols and communication within the rail industry. The events left a lasting scar on the community, with many families choosing to relocate in the wake of the tragedies.

On May 12, 1989, Southern Pacific freight train 7551 rocketed down California’s Cajon Pass at over 100 mph before derailing into a San Bernardino neighborhood. Caused by fatal weight miscalculations and failing brakes, the crash killed four people and destroyed seven homes. But thirteen days later, a second catastrophe struck the exact same street when a damaged underground pipeline ruptured, igniting a massive inferno. A set of inscribed panels carved by the ancient Maya people of Central America inspired Dr Neil Brodie of Cambridge University, an expert on the looting of archaeological treasures, and Mayanist Simone Clifford-Jaegar, to mount an expedition to the jungles of Guatemala. Their mission - to find the lost city from which the stone panels came. Archaeologists have been searching for the mysterious place known as Site Q since the 1960s without success. Quest For The Lost City travels down the Usumacinta River, a site well-travelled by experts; and then deep into the jungle where the explorers find a recently discovered 'lost city'. Here, the mystery of Site Q takes a surprising and revelatory new turn thanks to a sporting hero named 'Red Turkey', a map showing two stones in the jungle clearing, and a Museum Director in Maine... Forensic geologist Scott Wolter travels to the Hawaiian Islands to investigate the legend of the Menehune - a race of dwarf-like people in Hawaiian tradition. This is an extraordinary story of the most disturbing witch trial in British history and the key role played in it by one nine-year-old girl. Jennet Device, a beggar-girl from Pendle in Lancashire, was the star witness in 1612 in the trial of her own mother, her brother, her sister and many of her neighbours; thanks to her chilling testimony, they were all hanged. Although the events in this film may date back four hundred years, its issues resonate today as much as ever - when to believe our children, and how, in times of crisis, fear of evil can easily lead us to behave in ways which may corrode the very values that we most wish to protect.Presented by Simon Armitage - poet, playwright and novelist - this film is peppered with his revealing insights into the characters' emotional turmoil and cutting-edge use of animation, bringing this courtroom drama to life. Four hundred years on, the trial's issues resonate as much as ever - when should we believe our children, and just how powerful can the fear of evil be? It's like Netflix for history...
