#405 Why They Left Christianity: Analyzing Real Deconstruction Stories | Matt Schmidt

The Alisa Childers Podcast

Summary

A recent discussion explores the phenomenon of faith deconstruction among Christians, focusing on personal narratives that reveal the complexities behind their spiritual journeys. The conversation emphasizes that many individuals who abandon their faith often do so not merely due to intellectual challenges or moral dilemmas, but because their beliefs were built on shaky foundations. The hosts argue that a reliance on certainty about the Bible or personal experiences can lead to cracks in faith when faced with skepticism or alternative viewpoints.

The analysis includes several personal stories from individuals who have deconstructed their faith, highlighting common themes such as the realization that non-Christians can also embody goodness and morality. This realization often prompts questions about the source of their own moral compass and the validity of their beliefs. The hosts stress the importance of understanding that goodness can stem from being created in the image of God, regardless of one's religious affiliation. They caution against equating morality solely with Christian beliefs, suggesting that many people exhibit kindness and ethical behavior without recognizing its divine origin.

Throughout the discussion, the hosts advocate for a faith grounded in the authority of Jesus rather than a rigid adherence to scripture alone. They encourage listeners to engage with those who are questioning their faith by emphasizing the core tenets of Christianity, such as the need for grace and the recognition of human fallibility. The conversation serves as a reminder that addressing the underlying issues of faith deconstruction requires empathy and a focus on the person of Jesus, rather than merely defending doctrinal positions.

Show Notes

In Part 1 of my conversation with Matt Schmidt, we explored his argument that many deconstruction stories reveal a deeper problem: faith that was ultimately built on something other than the person and authority of Jesus Christ.

In Part 2, we put that thesis to the test by watching and analyzing real deconstruction stories posted online. We hear from former Christians whose faith unraveled over questions about morality, the Word of Faith movement, biblical criticism, the Epic of Gilgamesh, the nature of faith, and more.

With each story, we ask four important questions: What was their faith originally built on? What caused the first crack? What replaced that foundation? And was Jesus himself ever really the problem?

Along the way, Matt and I discuss why Christianity must ultimately be grounded in the person, work, and authority of Jesus Christ—and why understanding what someone is actually rejecting may be crucial to helping those who are deconstructing reconsider the faith they left behind.

Decades ago, Christian philosopher and apologist Francis Schaeffer warned that evangelical Christianity was heading toward what he called “The Great Evangelical Disaster.” He believed that as Christians increasingly accommodated the spirit of the age, compromised biblical authority, and abandoned objective truth, the consequences would be devastating. Looking at the church today, was Schaeffer right?
