Building AI That Delivers Real Value in Rural Healthcare with Bob Berbeco

Becker’s Healthcare Podcast

Summary

Health system executives are currently facing a challenging landscape, tasked with making durable technology decisions amid rapid changes in the healthcare environment. The Becker's 11th Annual IT and Revenue Cycle Conference, titled The Future of AI and Digital Health, aims to address these challenges. Set to take place from September 14 to 17 at the Hilton Chicago, the conference will gather over 2,500 executives and more than 600 speakers to tackle pressing issues such as scaling AI responsibly, cybersecurity, optimizing revenue cycles, and making lasting tech investments.

In a recent podcast, Laura Dierdo spoke with Bob Berbeco, CIO of Mahaska Health in Iowa, about the evolving role of technology in healthcare. Berbeco highlighted that the traditional responsibilities of CIOs have expanded. His focus now includes not just maintaining IT infrastructure but also integrating artificial intelligence and information management practices to improve patient care and operational efficiency in a rural healthcare setting.

Berbeco shared insights from his strategic plan, emphasizing the importance of trust and value in AI applications, particularly in reducing clinician burden and improving data governance. He described how Mahaska Health is moving toward a more intentional use of AI, focusing on workflow-enhancing tools rather than isolated pilot projects. This includes the development of in-house AI solutions to assist staff with coding and insurance denial reduction.

One major initiative involved pausing isolated AI projects to create a Center of Excellence to better align AI opportunities with operational needs. Berbeco underscored the significance of engaging existing staff in upskilling efforts to harness their unique talents, such as leveraging a nurse practitioner's clinical background to aid AI development.

Looking ahead, Berbeco expressed his curiosity about the broader implications of AI on human interaction within healthcare. He stressed the necessity of balancing technological integration with maintaining meaningful human connections, aiming for AI to enhance rather than diminish these bonds.

The conversation reflects a broader trend in healthcare where technology is increasingly tailored to meet the practical needs of clinicians and patients while ensuring that the human element remains at the forefront of care. As organizations prepare for ongoing changes, discussions like these will be pivotal in shaping the future of healthcare technology.
